Last night, the Thornton City Council voted 6-3 to send the Thornton Assistance Funds (TAF) recommendations back to a future planning session for a deeper review.

I want to sincerely thank my fellow council members who supported this effort and recognized the importance of transparency, accountability, and due diligence when it comes to the use of taxpayer dollars.

This was never about opposing the important work that nonprofits do in our community. It was about ensuring that the process used to evaluate and recommend funding is clear, consistent, and fair to both the taxpayers who fund these programs and the organizations that invest their time and effort into applying.

The additional review will provide us and the public an opportunity to better understand how recommendations were made and how we can improve the process moving forward. Every applicant deserves confidence that they were evaluated using a transparent and equitable process, and every resident deserves confidence that public funds are being allocated responsibly.

Thank you to everyone who reached out, shared their perspectives, and remained engaged throughout this discussion. Good government requires asking questions, seeking clarity, and being willing to revisit decisions when concerns arise.

I look forward to continuing this conversation and working toward a process that reflects the accountability and fairness that Thornton residents expect and deserve.

I will be joining my fellow councilman, I encourage everyone to join us for a coffee and a day of remembrance. Looking forward to the conversations.

My coffee meet-up for May will be Monday morning, Memorial Day. Please join me and other residents at the Veteran's Memorial site at 730 am where we'll also take a moment to honor and remember our fallen.

I was unable to attend the planning session tonight regarding the Thornton Assistance Funds recommendation because I was attending my daughter’s kindergarten graduation; a moment I wouldn’t trade for anything.

That said, after reviewing the recommendation, I am disappointed by the decision of my fellow council members to move forward with the recommendation.

Multiple Christian affiliated charities and churches that provide food assistance, housing support, outreach, counseling, and other critical services to Thornton residents were excluded from the final funding recommendations. If every single one independently failed to meet the requirements or scoring thresholds, that alone points to a serious problem in either the evaluation criteria or how the process was conducted.

At the same time, several organizations received significant increases in funding allocations; including one organization connected to a sitting council member through board involvement. That raises serious questions about consistency, fairness, transparency, and potential favoritism in the process.

Assuming all 7 faith-based applicants out of 38 total applicants, and 22 organizations were recommended, the odds that all 7 would receive $0 purely by random chance are about 0.09% or roughly 1 in 1,103.

Whether intentional or not, the complete exclusion of Christian organizations creates the appearance of bias and/or discrimination, and voters deserve to be aware of that.

I believe taxpayers expect equal treatment for organizations serving our community, regardless of religious affiliation or political relationships. At a minimum, the public deserves a clear explanation of how applications were scored, how recommendations were made, and why every Christian affiliated organization was denied.

We clearly need greater transparency, accountability, and a review of the scoring and recommendation process moving forward.

Thornton residents deserve openness and fairness when their tax funds are involved.

Thornton welcomed regional partners for a collaborative meeting with the Adams County Council of Governments, where leaders came together to align on priorities impacting our communities.

We were also proud to highlight one of our key public safety investments our advanced police training facility. With hands-on, scenario-based training environments focused on real-world response and de-escalation, along with specialized spaces like the indoor range and driving course, this facility plays a critical role in preparing officers to serve not just Thornton, but communities across our county.

Here is a small clip of Greg Mills Brighton mayor, Rocky Teter Commerce City Councilman and myself taking a ride.

Big thank you to all the officers who made the experience possible.

A great read on our city's 70th birthday:

Seventy years ago, a housing developer looked at an empty stretch of land north of Denver and saw the future. What Sam Hoffman built there became the city of Thornton — and a free public exhibit is now telling that story.

Yesterday, we marked an important milestone for our community with the uncoupling ceremony of Fire Station 8.

This tradition represents more than just opening a new station, it symbolizes readiness, service, and the commitment our firefighters make every single day to protect Thornton. By “uncoupling” the hoses, we signify that this station is now in service and ready to respond when our community needs it most.

Fire Station 8 will strengthen emergency response times, support our growing city, and ensure our first responders have the resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.

Thank you Chief, Mayor Jan Kulmann, City of Thornton, and to everyone who helped make this station a reality. Most importantly to the men and women of City of Thornton Fire Department for your continued dedication and sacrifice.

Thornton is stronger and safer because of you.
