Today, Thurston got to join in on the fun with Overcomers' Academy for their End of the Year Bash! 🎉🚒

We had a great time hanging out with the kids, enjoying the celebration, and helping make the day a little extra special. Thank you for having us out — we always love spending time with our community! ❤️

Today was one of those days that puts things into perspective.

The goosebumps we felt taking Chief Andy Hay on his final ride are something we’ll never forget.

Seeing people standing on sidewalks just to pay their respects. Watching people step out of their vehicles at red lights, hats over their hearts. Seeing tears in the eyes of people sitting in traffic as the procession passed. And finally, seeing Thomaston Fire lined up, saluting Chief as we brought him home forever — it’s hard to put into words what that meant to us.

The respect shown to a man who gave over 40 years of service to protecting this community did not go unnoticed.

A very special thank you to Pike County Fire Department for covering our district with Engine 8 while we gave Chief the sendoff he deserved. An odd but meaningful coincidence, as Northside is technically Station 8 for the county. While we honored our Chief, you made sure the community remained protected, and for that we are incredibly grateful.

To the deputies with Upson County Sheriff - Dan Kilgore and Thomaston Police Department officers who stood at intersections and escorted us safely, thank you. To the 911 dispatcher who delivered her very first Last Call for Chief Hay — thank you for honoring him with grace. To Thomaston Fire Department, for lining the entrance with your personnel and rendering a salute as Chief came home one final time — thank you. Also a huge thank you to Rock Hill Fire Department, Thurston Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Lincoln Park Fire Department( Austin Bell)

And most importantly, thank you to this community.

From chill bumps to house fires, from good days to hard days, Northside has always been proud to serve you. Today, you showed us the same love and respect that Chief spent a lifetime giving to others.

We saw you. We felt your support. We love each and every one of you.

Chief, we’ve got it from here.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Northside Volunteer Fire Rescue retired Chief Andy Hay. While we work closely with all fire departments in Upson County, we have a special relationship with Northisde VFD as we share a service area. Chief Hay was a great mentor and the friendly competition between the departments made both of them what they are today. He will certainly be missed by many.

🚨 Tip Thursday – River Safety 🚨

🦺 Wear your life jacket. Yes, even if you “swim pretty good.” ESPECIALLY kids and toddlers.

💧 Drink WATER and stay hydrated… not “whatever’s in the cooler.”

📍 Let somebody know where you’re putting in, getting out, and when you plan to be back. We like float trips… not search parties.

🩹 Basic first aid knowledge is always a plus.

🛶 First time on the river? Go with someone who actually knows the river.

Stay safe and enjoy the river! 🌊

Last night, Members of Thurston Fire was invited to Northside Volunteer Fire Rescue to conduct a joint training focused on the “Denver Drill” a firefighter rescue scenario designed around removing a downed firefighter and also patients of an emergency from a confined space or window under high-stress conditions. This drill emphasizes teamwork, rapid intervention, mayday procedures, and self-rescue techniques that can make the difference in a real emergency.

We’re proud to have strong working relationships with neighboring departments and will be continuing our mayday and self-rescue training over the next several weeks to keep sharpening those critical skills.

Special thanks to Northside for hosting with Lt Watson from Northside along with our very own CPT Kaz for putting this training together and helping make it a success.

🚨 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

After years of Mother Nature deciding that 2:00 AM is the perfect time to visit Upson County… someone finally asked the important question:

“Why does all the bad weather happen at night?”

So naturally, Chief decided to take matters into his own hands and send an official email directly to Mother Nature herself.

At this time, we are still awaiting a response. 🌩️😂

See attached correspondence below.

Subject: A Few Polite Questions About Your Nighttime Shenanigans in Upson County

Dear Mother Nature,

I hope this email finds you well—and not in one of your “let’s wake everyone up with thunder at 2 a.m.” moods. I’m writing on behalf of the fine, sleep-deprived folks of the Crest Community, who are starting to think you might have a personal vendetta against our REM cycles.

Now, we fully understand you have a lot on your plate—seasons to juggle, ocean currents to stir, pollen to distribute—but could you please explain why severe weather only visits after dark? Do the storms get stage fright during the day? Are you trying to create your own version of “midnight drama”? I’m just saying—it’s tough to appreciate your meteorological artistry when we’re cowering in our closets in pajamas.

We wouldn’t mind a little advanced notice, either. Maybe schedule a scenic afternoon thunderstorm next time? Something where we can actually see the clouds before the power goes out and the dog hides under the bed again.

Anyway, we love your work—sunsets, rainbows, the occasional snowflake—but could you tone down the nighttime chaos just a smidge? Maybe send the next round of drama to, say, 2 p.m. instead of 2 a.m.?

With appreciation (and mild exhaustion),
Thurston Fire Department 🚒

🔥 International Firefighters’ Day 🔥

Today we recognize the men and women who answer the call—day or night—ready to serve their community.

Firefighters do more than fight fires. They respond to emergencies, train hard, and put others before themselves every single day. Many leave their jobs, their families, and their everyday lives at a moment’s notice—and their families make sacrifices right alongside them.

We are especially proud of our volunteer firefighters who serve this community selflessly.

Today, we also remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their service will never be forgotten.

Thank you to all firefighters for your dedication and sacrifice.
