Thomaston Fire and EMS Department Members Receive Phoenix Award

THOMASTON, MAINE — During the June 8, 2026, Thomaston Select Board meeting, members of the Thomaston Fire and EMS Department were recognized with the Phoenix Award for their role in the successful resuscitation and survival of a patient who suffered cardiac arrest on December 26, 2025.

The Phoenix Award, presented through Maine EMS, recognizes emergency responders involved in cardiac arrest cases where a patient survives because the Chain of Survival was successfully put into action. The award reflects the combined efforts of emergency responders, dispatchers, bystanders, hospital staff, and the broader community working together to achieve a successful outcome.

Fire and EMS Chief Dave Hanna noted that lifesaving events do not happen by chance. Rather, they are the result of years of training, preparation, continuing education, and investment in emergency response capabilities. Thomaston’s EMTs, Advanced EMTs, and Paramedics dedicate countless hours to developing and maintaining the skills necessary to respond effectively during critical emergencies.

The members recognized with the Phoenix Award were Captain and Advanced EMT Earl Sutherland, Lieutenant Paramedic Ryan Morton, Lieutenant Paramedic Joseph O’Hare, Lieutenant and Advanced EMT Charlie Adams, Paramedic Sebastian Sanfilippo, Paramedic Charles Swan, and Advanced EMT Kaytlin Maynard.

Although Maine EMS does not formally recognize non-EMS personnel through the Phoenix Award program, the Thomaston Fire and EMS Department also recognized Firefighter Silas Spears and Floyd Lawrence for their assistance at the scene and support of emergency operations.

“There is no greater outcome in our profession,” said Chief Hanna. “Calls like this represent the pinnacle of what we do and reflect the dedication, professionalism, and teamwork of everyone involved.”

The Town of Thomaston extends its sincere congratulations and appreciation to these individuals for their outstanding service and commitment to the community.

Town of Thomaston Honors Roberta Carmichael with the 2026 Spirit of America Award

THOMASTON, Maine — The Town of Thomaston is proud to announce that Roberta Carmichael has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Spirit of America Award in recognition of her outstanding volunteerism, leadership, and dedication to serving others through the Inter-Church Fellowship Food Pantry.

The Spirit of America Award honors individuals whose commitment to community service, generosity, and compassion strengthens the lives of those around them. Roberta exemplifies these qualities through her tireless efforts as Food Pantry Director, where she has spent several years helping ensure that local families have access to food and essential resources.

Behind the scenes, Roberta is the driving force that keeps the pantry operating smoothly. She coordinates volunteers, manages donations, and carefully stretches every available resource to maximize support for those in need. Her dedication often extends beyond her official responsibilities, as she regularly spends her own time shopping strategically to take advantage of sales, discounts, and special opportunities to purchase additional food and household necessities, which she then donates to the pantry.

While her impact on the community is significant, Roberta remains remarkably humble. She prefers to focus attention on the mission rather than herself. When it comes to advocating for the pantry and raising awareness of its services, she willingly steps forward, attending community events and helping ensure that those who need assistance know where to turn.

“Roberta embodies the true spirit of community service,” said Town officials. “Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others have made a lasting difference in the lives of countless individuals and families throughout our area.”

The award was presented during the Thomaston Select Board meeting on June 8, 2026. Pictured are Spirit of America Award recipient Roberta Carmichael and Town Clerk Joanne Moulton.

The Town of Thomaston extends its sincere appreciation and congratulations to Roberta Carmichael for her extraordinary service and for exemplifying the values recognized by the Spirit of America Award.
