Rest in Peace Father Lundy… Thank you for your commitment and dedication to the fire service
COPENHAGEN, NY — Samuel P. Lundy, 83, of Washington St., passed away at home on Thursday evening, April 30, 2026.
Born on June 15, 1942, in West Carthage to J. Henry and Alice R. Nicholl Lundy, he attended rural schools and graduated from Carthage Central High School with the Class of 1959. He then graduated from the former Simmons School of Embalming in Syracuse in 1963 and became a NYS Licensed Funeral Director. He served eight years in the United States Army Reserve with the 440th Medical Co. at Fort Drum, NY.
He began a successful career in funeral service on January 1, 1965, by purchasing the former Dunlop Funeral Home in Harrisville. In 1975, he acquired the former Bossuot Funeral Home in Carthage and merged the operations to create Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, Inc., which later added a branch in Copenhagen. He also owned and operated the former Simpson-Lundy Funeral Home in both Watertown and Cape Vincent from 1979 until 1985. He continued to manage the funeral business until his retirement on January 1, 2000.
While residing in Harrisville, he met local schoolteacher, Virginia Christine Beck. After a brief courtship, they were married at the Harriville Methodist Church on October 15, 1972. Following the birth of their first son, Cullen Daniel, in 1974, they relocated to Carthage. In Carthage, they had two more children: Garrett Matthew, born in 1979, and Janessa Christine, born in 1980. Following his retirement, they moved to Copenhagen in 2003. Virginia passed away on April 2, 2008, at the age of 62.
After Virginia’s death, he felt a profound calling to serve others in a new capacity and received ecclesiastical endorsement from the Cathedral College of St. Matthew’s in Hamilton, Ontario. Upon entering the priesthood of the Independent Anglican Church, he co-founded Christ the King Church in Watertown alongside Bishop Douglas J. Marlow, where he served as an associate priest. His ministerial reach extended deep into the community, as he was heavily involved in various local and state fire service and law enforcement organizations, often serving as a dedicated public safety chaplain. His spiritual journey led him to enter into the full-communion of the Roman Catholic Church at the end of his life, a desire he has had for many years.
He is survived by his sons and their spouses: Cullen and Sara Lundy, and Garrett and Joyce Lundy, all residing in Carthage, as well as his daughter Janessa Lundy and her companion Ross Netusil of Syracuse. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Reagan Elizabeth, Owen Samuel Michael, and Justin Scott Lundy. His surviving siblings are Erin C. (Sally) Lundy, John N. Lundy, and Lynette Lundy (David) Beck, all of Carthage. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, in 2008, and his brother, Patrick H. Lundy, in 2022.
Calling hours will be held from 2:00 - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. Rev. Barrie-Lyn Foster will conduct a Fire Department Memorial Service at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, with the Rev. Christopher C. Carrara officiating. Burial with Military Honors will take place in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery, Champion.
