Today marks day one of fire school for Recruit Class 26-02. The class is compiled of 29 eager recruits from 7 fire agencies in our area, including Mobile, Prichard, Theodore-Dawes, Spanish Fort, Saraland, Bayou la Batre, and Daphne.

Over the next 11 weeks, these women and men will undergo high-standard, physically-demanding training to ensure that they are well-prepared to serve their communities with competence and pride.

“It’s like Christmas morning or the first day of spring training. It’s exciting! We’re expecting a lot from them, and they expect a lot from us. Everything we give to these recruits, we hope that they take it with them as a foundation and use it throughout the rest of their careers,” said Training Captain Jonathon Lyles.

SMOKE ALARMS
Smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.

Here's what you need to know!
• A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area.
• Install alarms on every level of the home.
• Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
• Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.
• Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
• Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.
• When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
• Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.
• You should also have a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home as well as a fire extinguisher.

Knowing where to go for medical care can help you receive the right treatment while keeping emergency resources available for those who need them most.

Urgent care is generally appropriate for minor illnesses and injuries that need prompt attention but are not life-threatening. The emergency room is better equipped for serious conditions requiring immediate evaluation.

Please remember that 911 should only be used for true emergencies. Unnecessary 911 calls can tie up ambulances, firefighters, and dispatchers who may be needed for someone experiencing a life-threatening emergency.

Call 911 for signs of a heart attack or stroke, severe difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, or any life- or limb-threatening emergency. If you are unsure whether a serious or rapidly worsening condition is an emergency, don’t delay—call 911.

C Shift to the Rescue!

Not every rescue involves smoke and flames.

C Shift responded today to help this four-legged resident who had managed to get herself stuck underneath a backyard shed. She had squeezed through a small opening and gotten far enough underneath that our crew couldn’t initially reach her.

With a little patience, some encouragement, and plenty of sweet talking, they were able to get her to work her way close enough to grab hold. Once she was within reach, the crew grabbed a couple of paws and her collar and carefully pulled her to freedom.

Judging by the smile — and the immediate case of the zoomies afterward — we’d say she was pretty happy to be out. 😂🐕💨

Sometimes the smallest calls make for the best ones.

Fires - 18
EMS - 390
Hazardous Condition - 5
Service Call - 7
Good Intent - 2
False Alarms - 13

Fire calls break down as follows;
Structure Fires - 6
Mobile Home Fires - 4
Brush/Grass Fires - 2
Trash Fires - 5
Special outside fire - 1

A little bit of a facelift around the station 1!!!

We want to send a huge thank you to Rawls Asphalt for generously donating the recent seal coating of our parking lot. Their support gave the entire property a much-needed refresh and made a tremendous difference in how the station looks.

We also want to thank Coastal Markings LLC for coming behind them and doing an outstanding job striping the lot and putting the finishing touches on everything.

As a fire department, we’re fortunate to have local businesses that are willing to step up and support us. Contributions like this allow us to put more of our resources where they belong—toward serving our community and keeping our crews ready to respond.
