NEWS: After Questions Over Army Promotions, a Navy List With No Women for Rear Admiral (Lower Half)

Last month, The New York Times reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth blocked the promotion of two Black officers and two women from an Army one-star list, raising questions about political influence in the military promotion process. Hegseth’s office denied the allegations.

Now, a new Navy flag officer list has been released: 22 captains nominated for rear admiral, lower.

Rep. Houlahan used Secretary Cao’s own “alpha males and alpha females” quote to press him on whether women who meet the standard should be allowed to serve, then tied his answer directly to the WARRIOR Act, which would protect gender-neutral standards and women’s ability to serve in combat roles.

Women have been allowed to serve in ground combat roles for over a decade, and today there are almost 5,000 women serving in these positions.

In December, Secretary Hegseth ordered a six-month review on the effectiveness of women in ground combat. Recently, that review was extended to 12 months, assigned to a new contractor, and given additional requirements.

During last week’s testimony, he refused to directly answer questions about the study.

We have FOIA’d the awarded contract in an effort to give the public transparency into who is conducting the review, what changed, and how conclusions will be reached.
