Hutchinson River Restoration Project

Hutchinson River Restoration Project Weโ€™re working to clean, restore and open access to the Hutchinson River for all to enjoy. The river is highly polluted- the water quality is degraded.

The Hutchinson River starts as a fresh water stream whose source is located in Scarsdale and then flows south for five miles through lower Westchester County and part of the Bronx, where it becomes tidal and empties into Eastchester Bay. In 1999 the Department of Environmental Conservations listed the Hutchinson River as belonging to the most polluted category that the state employs. On Sunday, Se

ptember 26, 2010 approximately 65 volunteers came to participate in the beginning of the reclaiming of the Thomas Pell Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary, which is located on the east bank of the Hutchinson River in Pelham Bay Park, is the second largest salt marsh habitat in New York City. Because the Sanctuary is a salt marsh, it is not accessible by land and must be cleaned up from the Hutchinson River. To the best of our knowledge, there has never been a major cleanup effort before this.

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ750 Pounds of Trash Removed from the Hutchinson River shoreline and nature trails at Pelham Bay Park

Two dozen hard-working volunteers joined us near the Pelham Bit Stables to help remove trash from the salt marsh and surrounding nature trails.

A special thank you to a few of our long time volunteers, the newcomers, and buildOn which brought 25 students from Bronx schools

We could not have done it without our partner, the Natural Areas Conservancy Natural Areas Conservancy. Thank you for supporting the cleanup and providing free horseback trail rides to the first 20 volunteers.

It did not take long before volunteers who were initially hesitant soon ventured into the reeds to collect plastic bottles and other debris from the shoreline. One volunteer even unearthed an old metal gate buried in the dirt and added it to the growing pile of trash.

After the cleanup, many volunteers enjoyed a free 45-minute horseback trail ride. For many of the students, it was their very first time riding a horse.

BuildOn shared that their students had a wonderful time exploring the area, learning about the local ecosystem, and contributing to restoration efforts. They were excited to be part of a project that made a visible and lasting difference.

๐Ÿ’š Thank you to everyone who came out to help restore and protect the Hutchinson River. Every cleanup brings us one step closer to a healthier river for people to enjoy and wildlife to thrive.

We love our parks!

Over a dozen volunteers joined Hutchinson River Restoration for a cleanup along Rodmanโ€™s Neck, where the Hutchinson River flows into Long Island Sound. Together, we removed nearly 400 pounds of trash from the shoreline, including plastic bottles, wrappers, styrofoam, and debris of all shapes and sizes, helping make our watershed a little cleaner and healthier. ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’™

Thanks to years of continued cleanup efforts, weโ€™re now seeing fewer plastic bottles and large trash items along the shoreline, a reminder that community action truly makes a difference.

We were also joined by David Abreu from Save the Sound, who helped survey the shoreline for tiny plastic pellets known as โ€œnurdles,โ€ which have been found in nearby areas. While none were found during this cleanup, the search continues. Reach out to David if youโ€™d like to volunteer for future surveys.

After the cleanup, volunteers gathered for lunch at the City Island Yacht Club and enjoyed beautiful views of the bay together.

Special thanks to all of our volunteers, especially the Boys, Girls, and Cub Scouts of Pelham, for showing up and making an impact! ๐Ÿ‘โ™ป๏ธ
