Amanda Farías is the Council Member for the 18th District, representing parts of Castle Hill, Clason Point, Harding Park, Parkchester, Shorehaven, and Soundview. Amanda is a lifelong Bronxite, born and raised in Soundview as a second-generation Afro-Latina of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. She is a proud product of local schools and community institutions. Growing up she attended P.S. 69X and

Holy Cross School, and spent after-school hours learning to dance and summers at camp in Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. John’s University with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Politics and Master of Arts in Public Administration, where her passion for community service, activism, and empowerment began. Soon after graduate school, she started her career by fighting voter suppression and mobilizing Black and Latino communities for President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. Council Member Farías’ extensive experience includes working for the New York City Council from 2013 to 2017 in several different capacities, including Director of Special Projects, managing the Women’s Caucus and a districtwide Participatory Budgeting process. After her time in the Council, Amanda joined The Consortium for Worker Education as an Assistant Director in 2017, to manage workforce development programming in the Bronx. Amanda’s programming and partnerships with CUNY, labor unions, and local community-based organizations have allowed her to create new opportunities for young Bronxites to access trade jobs. During this time she also served as the New York State Coordinator for New American Leaders and as the Co-Founder of Women of Color for Progress. Through her work with these organizations, Amanda created a pipeline for more women to be elected to office through increased civic engagement and opportunities in electoral politics. During the height of the pandemic Amanda became active in mutual aid and feels most in her element when in community. Hosting food distributions for neighbors has been at the core of her service to continue the fight against food insecurity and The Bronx being the unhealthiest county in NYS. She was elected as the Council Member of the 18th district in 2021. Amanda currently resides in Parkchester with her dog and cat. Council Member Amanda Farías is the Chair of the Committee on Economic Development and the Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus.

Every year, I have the honor of joining the Jacobi Health & Hospital community to remember and reflect on September 11, 2001.

Today, 25 years later, we continue to carry the memory of those we lost, honor the bravery and sacrifice of our first responders and frontline workers, and recognize the resilience of the families and communities who have carried this loss forward.

This year was especially meaningful. I was able to place a flower in memory of Carmen Alicia Rivera, a District 18 community member we lost on September 11. I am grateful to have another opportunity to honor Carmen after our street co-naming last year, and all those whose lives were forever changed that day. 🌹

Thank you to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi for continuing this important tradition of remembrance, resilience, and unity.

25 years later, we remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

I visited Jacobi’s Stand Up to Violence team to learn more about the work they are doing to prevent and interrupt violence across the Bronx. Executive Program Director Carjah Dawkins-Hamilton and the SUV team walked us through their community-based approach, the progress they have made, the challenges they continue to face, and where stronger partnerships can help expand their impact.

I’m grateful for the chance to hear directly from the team about what they are seeing on the ground and where government can be a stronger partner. Thank you to Jacobi SUV for the work you continue to do with Bronx families and communities every day.

Last week, I visited the National September 11 Memorial & Museum ahead of today’s 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Today, my heart is with the families and loved ones of the 2,977 people killed that day. We remember each life taken and honor the first responders and everyday people who met unimaginable danger with courage and service.

We also stand with the responders, survivors and recovery workers living with 9/11-related illnesses, and remember those lost to these illnesses in the years since.

“No day shall erase you from the memory of time.”

A quarter century later, that remains our promise. New York will never forget.

The PSA 8 Community Council returned from its summer break for its September General Meeting at Life Together Works NYC , bringing NYCHA residents and public safety leadership back together.

These meetings give residents across District 18 a direct place to ask questions, raise concerns and seek follow-through on the issues affecting their developments. Thank you to President Robert Hall, Vice President Walter McNeill and NYPD Housing Bureau for continuing to make that dialogue possible.

At today’s Meeting, the Council passed three bills I sponsored or co-prime sponsored to help preserve historic African American burial sites, strengthen accountability for to***co and electronic-cigarette retailers that violate cannabis laws, and improve the City’s response to dog-waste complaints.

I am especially proud that Resolution 82 passed after more than a year of working to advance it. New York City will now formally recognize the Feast of San Gennaro and the Ferragosto Festival each September, honoring their cultural significance and generations of Italian American contributions to our city.

I also introduced legislation focused on bringing ferry service to City Island, expanding affordable veterinary care, improving our dog runs, making bicycle lanes safer, protecting Haitian immigrants, recognizing reggaeton’s New York legacy and removing barriers to lactation care.

Following the implementation of my small-business loan readiness bill, now Local Law 36, I welcomed Commissioner Kenny Minaya to District 18 to continue that work directly with local business owners.

The law requires SBS to help small businesses prepare for the lending process, from developing business plans and financial documents to understanding loan requirements and the services available through local CDFIs.

Along Castle Hill, Ellis and Westchester avenues, we visited Brisas del Caribe, Your Favorite Spot and Taqueria El Chiltepín while discussing the day-to-day needs of the surrounding commercial corridor.

Daisy is the owner of a coffee shop and gallery space in Westchester Square, right next door to her laundromat, and she is already focused on making it a space for community.

It was so great to distribute school supplies and backpacks to the kids who came out for her Block Party and to see so many people gathered to make the most of the day in a shared space filled with creatives, community activists and nonprofits. Applying for a small business loan comes with enough moving parts. Figuring out what paperwork you need, what lenders expect and whether you are ready to apply can sometimes serve as a roadblock.

I introduced Intro. 1350-A (now known as Local Law 36 of 2026) to make the process easier.

The law requires the Department of Small Business Services to provide loan readiness resources to help business owners strengthen their plans, prepare financial documents, understand application requirements and learn about financing options through local Community Development Financial Institutions.

Because small business owners should be able enter the lending process feeling prepared, informed and ready for what comes next—and I’m proud to have advanced this legislation to help make that possible.
