Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes
• When the weather is very cold outside, let the water drip from faucets with pipes in outside walls. Running water through the pipe – even at a trickle – helps prevent pipes from freezing. The temperature of the running water is above freezing.
• Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature day and at night. Don’t lower the temperature at night during the cold spell. It might raise the heating bill a little bit but can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
• If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home or business set to a temperature no lower than 55ºF.
• Shut off outside water.

To Thaw Frozen Pipes
• If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Locate the area of the water pipe that might be frozen. The most likely places are pipes running against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home.
• Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt more ice in the pipe.
• Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, or wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame devices. A blowtorch can make water in a frozen pipe boil and cause the pipe to explode. All open flames in homes present a serious fire danger, as well as a severe risk of exposure to lethal carbon monoxide.
• Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you cannot thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
• Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.
• Be careful using space heaters to warm up areas near pipes. Don’t overload circuits. Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets. Try not to use extension cords but if you must, make sure it is rated for the appliance, and only use one. Heat producing appliances need stronger extension cords than lamps.
• Remember not to leave the door of a gas oven open; it will produce large amounts of carbon monoxide.
• Be sure there are working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home.

requests residents take reasonable precautions to protect their water pipes. Adding a few hundred dollars to your heating bill is cheaper than thousands in home repairs and damage.

Ensure that the shutoff valves inside the house work and if needed replace them now before pipes break and you are unable to shut off water. The Town is getting temper data indicating that some basements were in the teens this past weekend.

To shut the water off from the outside this time of year is difficult as most are buried under snow and often times under the grass because resident don’t want their shutoff boxes exposed.

Crews had to clear snow, take measurements and then dig through frost to find the shutoff in this front lawn today. Without internal valve control the water keeps flowing inside the house.

Special shoutout to for shoveling out nearly 650 fire hydrants to support public safety and snowstorm clean up efforts. The town has close to 2,300 total.

Residents are encouraged to be hometown heroes and adopt a neighborhood hydrant to shovel out. If you see a flag there is a hydrant under the snow.

continues to work day and night to open sidewalks for safe travel. There is a lot of material to move and using the snowblower attachment is the best option for a cleaner operation. The process is slow but staff is making progress.

Other crews are out clearing intersections along Whipple Road, Chandler Street, Helvetia Street, Pleasant Street and other areas to make roadway travel safer.

Operations will continue into next week as the DPW monitors a chance for another weekend snowstorm.

Storm Update – The Town spent nearly 48 hours straight tackling Sunday / Monday’s significant snowstorm. The DPW asks residents to keep the following things in mind:
• DPW crews will be performing various snow related tasks throughout the week.
• Due to the extremely low temperatures, chemical treatments will not be as effective in melting snow/ice.
• Sight issues on corners of major roads will start to be addressed.
• Sidewalk clearing will start to be addressed but will be slower than normal. Residents are asked to assist where possible with sidewalk clearing.
• Trash barrels should not be placed in the road. They should be in the driveway and off the street to allow for plows to widen roads.
• Vehicles parked on Town roadways overnight may be towed at the owner’s expense.

Please contact the DPW at (978) 640-4440 for any snow and ice related issues. For emergencies, please dial 911 or contact the TPD at (978) 851-7373

is still working and asks residents to not be the person who plows, snowplows or shovels snow into the street.

This delays cleaning up the town, extends the operation (currently over 30 hours) and can create road hazards.

These actions can also result in fines.
