WHY YOU NEED TO KEEP CALLING YOUR REPRESENTATIVES

Often, we are asked if calling makes a difference. It absolutely does! You may feel that your elected officials already agree with your position or they will never be persuaded to vote the way you want them to. However, calling still matters. Why?

It creates a record.Every call is logged, and when enough people reach out on the same issue, it signals urgency.

It influences decisions.Lawmakers often prioritize issues that generate significant constituent engagement—sometimes even when they personally disagree.

It holds them accountable.Politicians rely on voter support. Frequent calls remind them they answer to you, not just their donors.

It fuels momentum.Your call might be the one that tips an issue into broader awareness, making officials take notice.

We hear you Calling Congress seems about as effective as yelling into a hurricane. I’ve gotten so many calls and emails lately asking me the same two questions: Do you notice a theme? Here’s the deal: Even though we’re in upside-down land, calling STILL matters. A lot. Why Calling Matters Whil...

The beginning of the end of the battle:

June 4, 1919, Congress approved the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which said that the right of Americans to vote “shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of s*x.” (The amendment was then sent to the states for ratification.)

The official start date of this movement was 1848!

Between January 1918 and June 1919, the House and Senate voted on the federal amendment five times.

Each vote was extremely close and Southern Democrats continued to oppose giving women the vote. [thanks southern dems!]

Suffragists pressured President Wilson to call a special session of Congress and he agreed to schedule one for May 19, 1919. On May 21, 1919, the amendment passed the House 304 to 89, with 42 votes more than was necessary.

On June 4, 1919, it was brought before the Senate and, after Southern Democrats abandoned a filibuster,36 Republican senators were joined by 20 Democrats to pass the amendment with 56 yeas, 25 nays, and 14 not voting. The final vote tally was:

20 Democrats Yea
17 Democrats Nay
9 Democrats Not voting/abstained

36 Republicans Yea
8 Republicans Nay
5 Republicans Not voting/abstained

Note: remember that during this time, Republican and Democrat stances were pretty much the opposite of today; i.e. generally speaking, Republicans were more in favor of woman suffrage than Democrats

Today marks the busiest primary election day of the 2026 midterms so far. Voters in Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon and Pennsylvania will participate in crucial contests.

President Trump's influence on his party will be tested in several Republican primaries. In Kentucky, GOP Rep. Thomas Massie faces off with Trump-backed candidate Ed Gallrein.

Recent primaries in Indiana and Louisiana have highlighted that Republican voters are willing to oust incumbents whom Trump deems disloyal.

Meanwhile, Democrats are aiming to flip Republican-held seats in November, and their primaries will highlight what is motivating their voters.

Here's what else NPR is watching on this big primary day.

Follow link to read about:

The recent SCOTUS decision has already changed plans for Alabama's primary

In Georgia, Republicans dominate spending and Democrats drive record turnout

All 105 legislative seats are up for grabs in Idaho

The crowded race in Kentucky to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell and the true meaning of MAGA

The race for governor of Oregon heats up

PA voters will test the definition of 'progressive' and decide three toss up GOP seats

Six states are holding primaries May 19 that could help to decide the balance of power in Congress and in key state governments.

A Letter to the Editor based on the recent post on this League page about Vote411, submitted on Tuesday April 28, was printed in the Saturday/Sunday edition of the Terre Haute Tribune-Star:

Readers’ Forum: Become informed with Vote411

As we approach Primary Day on May 5, I would like to urge people to utilize vote411. org. Vote411 is a project of the national League of Women Voters to collect information from candidates and make it available to voters.

Local Leagues such as ours create a committee whose task it is to create entries for each position up for election, provide information about the position, create a list of pertinent questions for each position and then contact all candidates with an invitation to complete the questionnaires. When received, the information is added to the Vote411 listing for each candidate.

If all candidates for a position respond, you can compare and contrast their answers to the same questions.

As of the date of this letter (Tuesday April 28), 22 of the 45 people contacted have chosen to interact through Vote411. I wish it was more, but much appreciate those who responded.

You can examine the submitted responses from candidates for State Representative Districts 42, 43, 45 and 46; Senate District 38; Judge Superior Court Division 2 and 5; County Assessor; County Sheriff; Prosecuting Attorney; County Commissioner 1; County Council Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4.

If candidates have not yet submitted their responses, it is not too late. Contact leahmyers1014@ yahoo.com. The League held several candidate forums for the primary and will do so again for the November election. Likewise, winning candidates will be contacted by League members again in the fall with a request to participate in Vote411.

Vote411 provides great opportunities to become an informed voter and a voter researcher as you create your voting plan.

Keep in mind that, while the League of Women Voters is non-partisan, some questions will reflect League issues and interests.

Check out the many other features related to voting and election issues of [oops, ‘on’] Vote411. Follow the League of Women Voters of Vigo County on Facebook.
