I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was the admin for the Vote NO page. My name is Josh Stonebraker and I am running for School Board.

I am running because I feel our school corporation needs a change. We are currently in need of accountability and fiscal responsibility. It is important that board members do not answer to different entities or have their own special interests at heart. With some members, votes may be persuaded. My vote cannot. Secondly, unlike my two opponents, I have children currently in the school corporation. The policies that are made, directly impact my children, as well as my family. Thirdly, while many may speak about security, it is my career. I have worked at the local, state, and now federal level earning knowledge in several security disciplines. As the Vice President of the Union, I have the skill set to read and negotiate policy, and have done so on the local, as well as national level. Therefore, giving me a firm grasp on how a board should be ran and operate. I am currently an instructor in several disciplines, including personal protection and security and diversity. As an instructor, I am responsible for training and classroom management. I also hold a position on our emergency response team and have been activated to civil unrest situations around the country.

Generally, retired teachers, administrators, or those with a background in education are commonly elected to the board. I feel that it is time for those who have been underrepresented on the board to finally have a voice. We need a voice for parents, businesses, and the betterment of the overall community and its citizens. This position is not just about education, as the decisions made in the board impact everyone within this community. The school board is supposed to function as the “checks and balances” to the school corporation, not a “rubber stamp” to everything the school corporation puts forth. My goal is to bring balance to the board and our community.

Education comes in many forms. The fact that my background is in the military, corrections, and enforcement, doesn’t mean that I don’t understand education. It means that I know how to follow orders, know how to assess a variety of situations, have critical and analytical thinking skills, and have the ability to work as a team. I have extensive experience in working together toward a common goal, and would like to continue doing so for the citizens of Vigo County.

I have posted more about my background pinned on my page, which I have listed below. Please feel free to follow it and message me with any questions you might have. If you’d like a sign, let me know, and I will get one to you. Thank you for your support!

My name is Josh Stonebraker and I am running for Vigo County School Board. As a fellow parent and a citizen, I plan to be a voice for families as well as the community. I am transparent, respectful, and have a stake in the next generation.

I have a background in corrections and law enforcement in a variety of capacities. I was in the Indiana Army National Guard from 2003-2012. I was deployed to provide aid and relief during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and later was deployed for a year in Operation Iraqi Freedom. While I am a senior officer specialist in corrections, I also am the Vice President of AFGE Union Local 720, member of the Disturbance Control Team, Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Diversity Instructor. I am also involved in correctional policy writing, at the national level.

These experiences have given me the skill set to be an active listener, to be transparent, and to do my own research. As a parent of three, I feel parents need to be represented and have a voice on the school board. I feel, I can bring knowledge of policy, operating within a budget, and a security mindset to the position. I believe these skills make me an excellent candidate for the Vigo County School Board.

Thank you to all who came out to vote today, and the days before. This truly was a grassroots effort, with people from all backgrounds and beliefs working together toward a common goal. Thank you for attending school board meetings, talking to friends and family, contributing to radio/tv ads, writing editorials, and sharing information. While we disagree that the referendum was the solution towards fixing our schools, we do agree that we need to continue to work together to create a solution that will satisfy us all. There is still much work to be done.

As we Head out to the polls this morning. I would like to thank all of you for sharing your ideas, and opinions, and helping make this grassroots movement really takeoff. It has been a David and Goliath undertaking, but I hope our voices will be heard and the VCSC learns that we expect fiscal accountability from them.
