It’s Conservation Saturday! As wolf presence expands in our state, the public can report wolf sightings at the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Wolf Reporting Portal. Solo wolves are known to journey far outside of their natal pack’s territory in search of a mate and space to call their own. It’s Throwback Thursday! Female coyote, Carosal (2005-2018), was the embodiment of “tiny but mighty.” She seemed to know she was the smartest animal in the world, and dared you to prove her wrong! Her small stature didn’t stop her from trash-talking her wolf neighbors and bossing around her companions, though she was never mean to them. Truly a force to be reckoned with, her feisty spirit left a lasting mark at Wolf Haven.

It’s Tenino Tuesday! Late spring and early summer are transformational for wolves, as they shed out their thick winter coats for sleek summer looks. There is, however, an awkward "in-between style" that makes us smile and shake our heads. The majestic are temporarily humbled, as wolfdogs Lore and Luca illustrate.

It’s Trail Cam Sunday! Male Mexican wolf M1630 (Darko) was recently removed from his pack of brothers due to aggression issues. Darko had long been the leader of the brother group, but he was pushed out by his younger brothers banding together to challenge him. We removed Darko from the group and paired him with female Mexican wolf, F1361 (Sedona). So far, Darko has been greatly enjoying the smells of his new enclosure!

It’s Food for Thought Friday! India is home to two subspecies of gray wolf: the Himalayan wolf (Canis lupus chanco) and the Indian gray wolf (Canis lupus pallipes). Only 3,170 Indian gray wolves remain in India, and they live in fragmented habitats with little connectivity between them.

In a recent study about habitat use by Indian gray wolves, it was discovered that Indian gray wolves avoid areas inhabited by large carnivores, such as leopards and tigers, and their presence increased in areas where trees had been cleared. While many studies have shown that canids often choose routes that are easier to traverse such as roads and trails, this study suggests that Indian gray wolves may also benefit from tree clearing due to the stimulation of understory vegetation growth that is beneficial to prey species. It’s Behind the Scenes Wednesday! We are pleased to announce that Greater Good Charities broke ground this morning on a new enclosure for Billie & we are thrilled to be a recipient of their incredible philanthropy! Not only is Greater Good Charities financing this entire build, but their own skilled team came to Tenino to do the labor. This partnership is the stuff dreams are made of, and we are so elated for female gray wolf, Billie, and her future partner to have a larger upgraded space to call home.

We would also like to thank Chad Powers of NW Green Clearing for their efficient and professional demolition/site preparation work, and Summit Fence Company, LLC for their excellent work in constructing a corridor that allowed us to shift Billie to her current temporary home. Stay tuned for more updates!

It’s Tenino Tuesday! What’s the Layla and Lore update, you ask? Still playing, of course! Chill Lore often starts play on his back, until Layla excites him enough to leap up and face her on his feet. These two make such a dynamic duo!

It’s Montana Monday! At McCleery Ranch, our work goes beyond providing sanctuary for the wolves. We are also advancing conservation efforts across the landscape, including with improving wildlife connectivity.

In this video, our McCleery Ranch Property Manager removes a section of double fence after coordinating with neighboring landowners to identify the priority area. Double-fencing is a major barrier to ungulate movement - making it difficult for them to clear both fences at once and increasing the risk of animals getting trapped between them.

Wolf Haven’s mission is to conserve and protect wolves and their habitat, and we’re proud to steward nearly 400 acres of prime wolf habitat here at the ranch. Your support helps make both sanctuary care and landscape-scale conservation possible, so thank you 💚 Stay tuned for more project updates out here on the ranch!
