May Run Stats Recap 🚒📊

May’s call volume brought us back to what we consider a more typical month for Moffat Volunteer Fire Department. With warmer temperatures, longer days, and summer activities beginning, more people were out enjoying the beautiful weather, tackling yard projects, preparing for graduations, and getting their gardens planted.

📞 Call Breakdown for May:

* Total Calls: 55
* EMS Calls: 35
* Fire Calls: 11
* Traffic/Transportation Accidents: 4
* Other Calls: 5

📅 Busiest Day of the Week:

* Saturday took the lead, outpacing every other day of the week with a total of 14 calls.
* The remaining days of the week stayed relatively busy as well, showing a consistent call volume throughout the month.

⏱️ Volunteer Hours & Community Involvement:

In addition to responding to calls, our members were honored to host the Central Texas Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association District 1 Spring Convention, welcoming firefighters and fire service leaders from across Central Texas to Moffat.

🔥 Burning Reminders:
While there is currently no burn ban in effect, we encourage everyone to burn responsibly.

Before conducting any outdoor burning:

* Call the Bell County Burn Line: 254-933-5555
* Burn only natural vegetation such as brush, leaves, and tree limbs
* Do not burn man-made materials, including treated lumber, construction debris, household trash, or other manufactured products
* Burning is only permitted during daylight hours and must be attended at all times

☀️ Summer Safety Reminders:
As we move into the summer months:

* Stay hydrated
* Wear a life jacket when enjoying time on the lake
* Never leave children unattended around pools or water
* Stay aware of changing weather conditions

This week, our focus is on diabetic emergencies and the differences between hyooglycemia and hyperglycemia.
Both conditions can be serious if left untreated; recognizing the signs can help family members and caregivers provide assistance until EMS arrives.

🍭 LOW BLOOD SUGAR (Hypoglycemia)
Low blood sugar can occur when a diabetic takes too much insulin, skips a meal, exercises more than usual, or becomes ill.
Signs & Symptoms:
⚠️ Shakiness�⚠️ Sweating�⚠️ Hunger�⚠️ Dizziness�⚠️ Headache�⚠️ Irritability / mood swings�⚠️ Confusion�⚠️ Slurred speech�⚠️ Weakness�⚠️ Loss of consciousness�⚠️ Seizures
What Family Members Can Do:
✅ If the person is awake and able to swallow, give 15–20 grams of fast-acting sugar:�• 4 ounces of fruit juice�• Regular (non-diet) soda�• Glucose gel or tablets�• Hard candy
✅ Recheck symptoms after 15 minutes and repeat if needed.
🚫 Do not give food or drink to someone who is unconscious or unable to swallow.
🚑 Call 911 if the person becomes unconscious, has a seizure, or does not improve.

📈 HIGH BLOOD SUGAR (Hyperglycemia)
High blood sugar usually develops more slowly and can occur when insulin is missed, during illness, infection, stress, or poor glucose control.
Signs & Symptoms:
⚠️ Increased thirst�⚠️ Frequent urination�⚠️ Dry mouth�⚠️ Fatigue�⚠️ Blurred vision�⚠️ Nausea or vomiting�⚠️ Abdominal pain�⚠️ Fruity-smelling breath�⚠️ Rapid breathing�⚠️ Confusion�⚠️ Loss of consciousness
What Family Members Can Do:
✅ Encourage water intake if the person is awake and able to drink.�✅ Help them check their blood sugar if equipment is available.�✅ Follow their physician’s diabetes management plan.�✅ Monitor closely for worsening symptoms.
🚑 Call 911 if the person becomes confused, has difficulty breathing, cannot keep fluids down, or loses consciousness.

💡 Be In The Know
A diabetic emergency can look similar to a stroke, intoxication, or other medical conditions. If you are unsure whether blood sugar is too high or too low, seek medical help immediately.
Knowing the signs could help save the life of a friend, family member, neighbor, or coworker.

Moffat Volunteer Fire Department would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported our Father’s Day Fish Fry fundraiser yesterday. We were blessed to see so many familiar faces, meet new members of our community, and enjoy an afternoon of great food and fellowship.

Because of your support, the event was a tremendous success. Every plate purchased helps us continue our mission of serving the Moffat community through emergency response, training, equipment, and fuel for the fire trucks!

We would also like to recognize the dedicated members of the Moffat Fire Corps (made up of community supporters) and our firefighters who spent countless hours planning, preparing, cooking, serving, and cleaning up. Events like these are only possible because of the teamwork and commitment of our people working behind the scenes.

A special thank you goes to James Longbrake and his wife, Barbi, who traveled all the way from Ponder, Texas, to support our event. We are honored by their dedication to the fire service and grateful for their support of our department. Congratulations to James on his recent election as Fourth Vice President of the State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas. We appreciate you both taking the time to spend the day with us.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to David Luedeke of 1-800-BOARDUP, and his wife, Kathy, for joining us and providing some much-needed koozies just in time for the Texas summer heat. We hope everyone was able to grab one before they were gone!

A special congratulations goes out to Ms. Sylvia, the winner of the Father’s Day gift basket generously donated by Bold Republic Brewing Company. Thank you to Bold Republic Brewing Company for supporting our fundraiser and helping make the event even more memorable.

UPDATE TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENT ON HWY 36:
All fire and EMS has cleared the scene. DPS has taken over the scene and partially opened HWY 36.

Please drive safe and slow down and pull over for flashing lights.
