I think I’ve doom scrolled enough. What’s your vision for the future, beyond discontentment for the present? The reality we want is within reach. We just need to be brave, be clear, and think sustainably on multiple fronts. The key is to simplify our approach, get back to the basics, and ignore the rest.

1. Basic needs are human rights.
2. Every person has worth.
3. Shared abundance strengthens communities.
4. Small actions create change.
5. Compassion overrides judgement.
6. Relationships matter more than transactions.
7. Collaboration multiplies impact.

Do you agree? What would you add to the list?

We don’t subscribe to doomerism, but we do look at the world honestly and decide what we’re going to do to make things better.

In 2021, I got laid off and decided to sell everything and live in an RV. Although I lived in national forests mostly, I learned a lot about life on the road. How to find safe parking, water rationing, stealth vehicles, battery power… What businesses will allow you to park overnight, what parks will allow you to live undisturbed. 2021 was an interesting time. But times have changed and car camping / van life has gotten a lot less friendly. More people are living on the road and whether they’re doing it out of necessity or choice, they’re living with less accommodations and more no parking signs.

This video was taken on the outskirts of San Francisco in an encampment I stumbled upon. unhoused neighbors

It’s amazing what a pair of clippers can do for the spirit! A haircut can open doors and make you feel human again. Our friends walked away looking and feeling brand new ☺️❤️‍🔥🫶🏾 what a treat! Thank you, Stephanie! Could not be happier, we are overjoyed that you came to our free breakfast!!! help the homeless, unhoused neighbors, hopecore, people helping people, , better world

She asked us a simple question, albeit tongue-in-cheek, but I wish we could do more.

The reality is, the vast majority of people living WITH and WITHOUT housing (experiencing homelessness) all want the exact same things: a safe place to sleep, stability, privacy, and a chance to build a better future. These things should be a given for all in our society.

As a small mutual aid group, we can’t offer housing YET (we absolutely want to connect with leaders in housing co-ops). But what we can do is show up.

We offer a hot meal, clean clothes, hygiene supplies, water, and genuine human connection for our unhoused neighbors. We make life a little easier today while we collectively build better systems for tomorrow.

People assume outreach is just about handing things out and going home but the reality is, these interactions stay with us long after. They keep us going day after day.

Until everyone has access to housing, food, healthcare, and more, we’ll keep showing up with what we can.

What does power mean to you? The shift is remembering what power IS, and realizing we’ve had it all along.

Once you see that, you stop asking what’s possible and start making connections.

Everything is already ours, so act like it!
Change starts in the mind and moves out through the hands.

When people think about housing and food insecurity, they often overlook those staying on couches, in motels, sober living homes, shared housing, reentry housing, etc.

We don’t!! 🫡❤️‍🔥

Our challenge as a small mutual aid group is that we can’t always heat and serve the food we receive from restaurants fast enough. On top of that, our local food banks don’t have the freezer or refrigerator space to accept it!

So how do we bridge that gap? Free frozen meals!

We portion donated sides into individual meals, partner with local chefs and cooks to prepare quality main dishes, freeze them, and distribute them to locations where people have access to microwaves. This round featured barbecue chicken, and every meal includes a QR code so folks can give feedback and help shape future menus.

Hunger is a systems problem, and this is a systems solution 🙂‍↕️🫡

Freezer meals are great because they:
-Reduce food waste
-Last longer than hot meals
-Give people flexibility to eat on their own schedule
-Support people in motels, shelters, shared housing, and beyond
-Create a sense of stability by having meals available for later
-Make transportation and distribution easier for small grassroots groups

Good food shouldn’t be reserved for people with money! If you’re a local chef or experienced cook who agrees, we’d love to connect. Our standards are high because everyone deserves meals made with care.

Want to help? The containers used in this video are one of our biggest needs right now! They’re freezer-safe and microwave-safe.

Link in bio to donate containers and help us transform our local food system.

It’s very frustrating, but the solutions are right in front of us.

We’re not in this predicament because we’re running out of food. Quite the contrary! It’s because our systems are extremely wasteful and inefficient.

People across the lifespan (kids, adults, seniors), both homeless and housed, are going hungry with very little relief. We’ve served folks living in shelters, motels, vehicles, on the streets, and in permanent housing, and all are having to navigate impossible choices. We help them by simply giving them what they need and putting good food in their hands.

Hunger is not a personal failure and food waste is not inevitable. Both are problems created by our systems, and our priorities can be changed.

If you believe food is a human right and that communities should take care of one another, you’re our kind of people!

What do you think is the biggest barrier preventing food from reaching the people?

05/29/2026

The truth: we got too many seedlings and I got overwhelmed 🤣 So we asked people for help but then I realized, what if we just made this a practice! And a decentralized food system was born! Share the Harvest 🌱

That one decision changed everything. Now we have multiple people growing food across different cities and neighborhoods: in raised beds, containers, balconies, patios, windowsills, and backyards. Some people have years of gardening experience, while others are trying it for the first time.

And that’s the beauty of decentralized food systems: everyone contributes differently based on their capacity, space, and skill level. You do not need acres of land to participate, nor do you need to be an expert gardener… and you don’t need to grow a ton of fruits and vegetables at one time!

Some folks took 2 plants, some took 20! We promote a culture of doing what you can, when you can, and how you can 😊🫶🏾

What we’re learning is that local food systems become stronger when knowledge, resources, and harvests are shared between all of us instead of depending entirely on large-scale, industrial systems. This is community resilience ✨

We’ve already had community members share fresh produce directly with their neighbors, and we’re continuing to experiment, learn, and improve as we go ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

If you’ve been wanting to help your community but don’t know where to start, this is your sign to try. If you’re in the Inland Empire, California, come join us!

Yes, you can do this too! Decentralized food systems sound complicated but a lot of it starts with regular people just deciding to grow something and share what they can.

That’s how the Share the Harvest Initiative was born! Now we have 10 different people who are growing food to share in their own ways: in the ground, on their balconies, in containers, etc. Some have experience gardening for years, others are learning for the very first time 😊

Building stronger communities means experimenting, learning together, and trying new things outside of the large-scale food model we’ve all been taught to depend on.

The framing of our word choices matter. You can say whatever you want but be so detached. Be aware that people experiencing homelessness have vastly different circumstances that led them there: rising rent, job loss, medical emergencies, domestic violence, disability, grief, generational poverty, and more.

Housing insecurity can happen to anyone, and we don’t serve people out of pity. We need to live in a society that prioritizes safe shelter, food, dignity, and community care for ALL.

We need to come together, think outside the box, and come up with housing and food systems that actually work for US!

If you’re working on real affordable housing systems or housing co-ops, let’s talk!
