Standing at French Valley Airport today, watching aircrafts prepare for takeoff, I was reminded that a successful flight begins long before the wheels leave the runway.
It requires a clear destination, strong preparation, reliable instruments, skilled people and the discipline to check the data throughout the journey.
Education is no different.
TVUSD’s currently reported districtwide numbers show:
- 94.6% of students graduating from high school
- 72.4% of graduates completing A–G requirements
- 46.1% of students enrolled in a Career Technical Education pathway
- 91.1% of students maintaining positive attendance

These numbers reflect important strengths, but they are instruments, not the entire flight plan.
We must continue asking what lies beneath the percentages:
Are students mastering reading, writing, mathematics, technology, and critical thinking? Are they learning financial literacy and practical life skills? Are they prepared to use technology and artificial intelligence safely and responsibly? Are we creating genuine pathways into college, skilled careers, military service, entrepreneurship and adult life?
Every student in Area 3 deserves more than a destination called graduation. They deserve the knowledge, judgment and practical preparation to succeed once they arrive.
Our children’s futures will not take off by accident. We must prepare them deliberately.
