Thank you Ouray County Government for joining us this September for Su***de Prevention Month!

At their regular meeting today, the Ouray County Board of County Commissioners unanimously proclaimed September 2026 as Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. This proclamation was jointly authored by Ouray County Public Health, Thrive Community Health Network and the Su***de Prevention and Recovery Coalition (SPARC).

Ouray County Public Health joins the Su***de Prevention and Recovery Coalition (SPARC) and Thrive Community Health Network in designating September 2026, as “Su***de Prevention Awareness Month” in Ouray County, Colorado. This Proclamation recognizes su***de as a national and statewide public health problem and su***de prevention as a national and statewide responsibility.
WHEREAS, in 2025, our region experienced 27 community member deaths by su***de, predominately middle to late aged white males (CDPHE); and,
WHEREAS, in 2025, 1,293 Coloradans died by su***de with the majority being males in the age range of 25-54 (CDPHE); and,
WHEREAS, each year, approximately 14 million adults seriously think about su***de, 4.6 million make a plan for su***de, and 2.2 million adults attempt su***de (CDC); and,
WHEREAS, our local Su***de Prevention, Awareness, and Recovery Coalition (SPARC) and organizations such as Thrive Community Health Network are dedicated to bringing hope to those affected by su***de through education, advocacy, and resources for those who have experienced suicidal thoughts or lost someone to su***de, and together urge that we:
1. Recognize su***de as a preventable public health problem, that there is no single cause of su***de, that anyone can experience suicidal thoughts, and that recovery from suicidal ideation is possible.
2. Acknowledge that no single su***de prevention program or effort will be appropriate for all populations or communities and address the disparity in access to mental healthcare for underserved and underrepresented groups while advocating to end these disparities.
3. Support the efforts of SPARC and Ouray County Public Health in fostering connection, normalizing access to mental health and substance use services, supporting Postvention Plans for a community response when there is a loss, and spreading the message that no matter the storm, we weather it together.
THEREFORE, Ouray County Public Health Agency joins with SPARC and Thrive Community Health Network in recognizing September 2026 as “Su***de Prevention Awareness Month” in Ouray County, Colorado.
