At last night’s monthly board meeting, we had the pleasure of hearing from three 2026 Adventure Camp about the Environment (ACE Camp) attendees!

They shared stories from their experiences with wildlife identification, edible plants, fishing, and more—including one camper who earned two Master Angler Awards for his bluegill catches! 🎣

We also got a little education on legless lizards! 🦎

Thanks again to the campers and their parents for joining us and sharing their experiences with the board. We’re glad you had a great time at ACE Camp!

September 2 is National Protect Your Groundwater Day 💧

It’s a great reminder to know what’s in your well water and take steps to protect its quality. Unlike public water systems, private domestic wells are not routinely monitored, making regular testing an important way to keep track of your drinking water quality and identify potential concerns.

The Nemaha NRD recommends annual testing and offers free testing for nitrates and bacteria for private domestic well owners in our district.

Yesterday, the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (DWEE) conducted an inspection of the principal spillway outlet at Wirth Brothers Lake.

Because Wirth Brothers Lake is classified as a low-hazard dam, it is inspected every five years. During the June 2026 inspection, it was discovered that no water was entering the inlet, while water was trickling from the outlet. This prompted DWEE’s dam safety team to take a closer look at the outlet system.

The team used a robotic crawler equipped with a camera to examine the inside of the concrete outlet pipe. The robot was navigated through the pipe using a controller and screen, allowing the team to capture video and images while looking for potential issues such as gaps in the pipe joints, cracks, or signs of leakage.

The inspection provided a closer look inside the outlet pipe, and the team indicated that they did not see a cause for concern. An official report will follow after the footage has been reviewed.

We appreciate the DWEE dam safety team for their assistance in ensuring the safety and proper function of the Wirth Brothers dam.

Steamboat Trace Trail Update 🌳🚲

The Steamboat Trace Trail remains closed south of Peru to the Honey Creek Bridge due to significant tree damage from the wildfire in late March. The cleanup is extensive and will require additional resources and equipment. The work has been included in the FY27 budget so additional resources can be brought in to complete the cleanup safely.

We anticipate having this section of the trail reopened by October 1. Updates will be provided as the work progresses.

Barricades remain posted at both ends of the closure. The sections of the trail north of Peru and south of the Honey Creek Bridge remain open.

In the meantime, field staff have been addressing areas along the rest of the trail that need attention.

We know this has been a long closure, and we appreciate everyone’s patience. We’re looking forward to getting this section cleaned up and reopened, too!

When Heavy Rain Falls, Our Watershed Structures Go to Work 🌧️💪

Yesterday’s heavy rainfall in parts of the district is a good reminder of why watershed flood-control structures are so important when heavy rain falls.

A watershed is an area of land where water drains to a common outlet, such as a stream, river or lake. When heavy rain falls, water runs off the land and flows through the watershed — what happens upstream can affect people, communities and land farther downstream.

That’s where watershed flood-control structures play an important role.

The Nemaha NRD has more than 400 watershed structures throughout the district. These structures are designed to slow and temporarily store runoff, helping control the rate at which water is released downstream.

By managing water within the watershed, these structures play an important role in reducing flooding impacts and helping protect lives, homes, communities, roads and other property.

This painted turtle at Duck Creek got the memo that National Relaxation Day is tomorrow! 🐢
