We meet every Friday at 12:15 PM at the American Legion Building at 222 Central Avenue, Tazewell, VA. We meet Fridays at noon in the American Legion Hall on the corner of Pine and Central. Join us for lunch and a great program as we try to better our town and our world, one project at a time.

📚 Rotary Club of Tazewell Welcomes Bluefield University

On September 4th, the Rotary Club of Tazewell was pleased to welcome Dr. Steve Peterson, President of Bluefield University, who shared a very informative and insightful program with our club. Dr. Peterson was introduced by Hal Keene, also of Bluefield University.

Dr. Peterson began by drawing connections between the mission of Rotary and the mission of Bluefield University, highlighting the shared commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in our communities.

He went on to share an inside look at Bluefield University, including its investments, vision for the future, enrollment composition, top programs of study, and growing national footprint. He concluded by discussing the university’s ongoing campus renovations and capital investments as it continues to prepare for the future.

We appreciate Dr. Peterson and Hal for taking the time to join us and for giving our club such an informative look at the exciting things happening at Bluefield University!

💙💛 Rotary Club of Tazewell — August 28, 2026 Meeting 💛💙

This past Friday, August 28, our Rotary Club was honored to welcome A Hope and Future Ministry, a Christ-centered residential recovery program, to share with us about the incredible work they are doing to help women find healing, restoration, and a new direction for their lives.

Founders Corey Sparks and Jill Howell shared their personal journeys of addiction and recovery with our club. Both Corey and Jill have experienced addiction firsthand and have maintained their own recovery, giving them a unique understanding of the challenges women face as they work toward rebuilding their lives. Their personal experiences have helped shape their passion and vision for providing others with the hope, support, structure, faith, and opportunities needed to find a new beginning.

Donna Havens was also part of the group sharing with our club and helping us learn more about the ministry and its mission.

• Recovery support groups

• A structured living environment designed to provide stability and accountability

3️⃣ Workforce Development Training
• Hands-on job training through the A Hope and Future Ministry Gift & Thrift Shop

• Faith community integration

A Hope and Future Ministry is currently looking for a house that can gradually accommodate up to 15 women at a time as they continue expanding this important work in our community.

There are many ways our community can come alongside A Hope and Future Ministry:

🙏 Pray — Pray for the women being served, their families, the ministry leaders, and the future of the program.

🙌 Volunteer — Give your time and talents to help support the ministry and the women in the program.

💙 Make a Contribution — Financial contributions help provide the resources needed to continue changing lives.

📦 Provide Supplies — Partner with the ministry by donating needed supplies and resources.

💰 Help with Fundraising — Organize or participate in fundraising events and creative fundraising efforts to support the ministry.

🎓 Share Your Skills — Become a guest trainer and help teach valuable life skills and workplace skills that can prepare women for successful re-entry into the community and workforce.

Every prayer, volunteer hour, donation, donated item, fundraising effort, and shared skill can make a difference.

Together, we can help create hope, restore lives, reunite families, and strengthen our community. 💙💛

We are grateful to Corey, Jill, Donna, and everyone involved with A Hope and Future Ministry for sharing their story and vision with our club. Their testimony is a beautiful reminder that recovery is possible, lives can be transformed, and there truly can be hope and a future.

Their commitment is a wonderful example of what can happen when faith, compassion, and community come together to create lasting impact.

And, of course, no Rotary meeting would be complete without a wonderful meal provided by Martha and Marla! 😋 Our members enjoyed barbecue chicken, roasted potatoes, corn casserole, salad, bread, and two delicious desserts.

💙 Rotary in Action: Supporting Alzheimer’s Research

Today, the Rotary Club of Tazewell was honored to welcome Milton Carter, CART Chair for Rotary District 7570, as our guest speaker.

Milton joined Rotary in May 2014 and has been an active leader in the Rotary Club of Kingsport Downtown, serving as Club President, Public Image Co-Chair, Programs Committee Co-Chair, and Membership Advocate for Area 13 of District 7570. From July 2021 through June 2024, Milton also served as Area Governor for Area 13.

Milton spoke to our club about CART — Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust, sharing the history of this unique Rotary fundraising program and explaining the significance of the work it supports.

CART was originally founded by Rotarian Roger Ackerman of Sumter, South Carolina, with a simple idea: encourage Rotarians to voluntarily empty the change from their pockets and purses at weekly Rotary meetings. What began with coins has grown into a powerful fundraising effort that now accepts contributions by cash, check, and credit card from Rotarians and Rotary clubs throughout the East Coast.

💙 Why CART matters:
CART is a natural fit with one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus, Disease Prevention and Treatment. Contributions help fund innovative Alzheimer’s research and support the search for better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

We appreciate Milton taking the time to share his knowledge and passion for CART with our club. His presentation was a wonderful reminder that even small contributions can make a tremendous difference when Rotarians work together.

And, of course, no Rotary meeting would be complete without a great meal! 😋 Today’s lunch consisted of ham, macaroni and cheese, squash and broccoli, tomato salad, and bread.

🚗 A Trip Down Memory Lane with Tom Witten at Rotary Club meeting! 🚗

Our Rotary Club of Tazewell had a wonderful meeting on Friday, August 14th, with a fascinating presentation from Tom Witten, who shared his impressive collection of antique and classic vehicles with us!

Tom’s collection includes:
🚘 1924 Model T Ford
🚘 1928 Model A Roadster
🚘 1929 Model A
🚘 1937 Ford V8
🚘 1950 Jeepster

It was a great opportunity to hear about these beautiful pieces of automotive history and the stories behind them. We appreciate Tom taking the time to share his passion and collection with our club!

Of course, no Rotary meeting is complete without a good meal! We enjoyed hot dogs with homemade chili and all the fixings, coleslaw, macaroni salad, and potato chips. 🌭

Thank you to Tom for a great program and to everyone who joined us! We’re continuing to Create Lasting Impact as we head towards celebrating the Rotary Club of Tazewell’s 100th anniversary year! 💙💛

We had another great meeting of the Rotary Club of Tazewell this past Friday! ❤️💛

Our guest speaker was Robert “Robbie” Harris with New Peoples Bank, who gave us a very informative presentation on scammers, their tactics, and how to protect ourselves from fraud.

Robbie shared helpful information on how to recognize common scams and, especially, how to tell the difference between a legitimate email and a phishing email. In today’s digital world, these are important skills for all of us to have! 📧🔍

Of course, we also enjoyed a delicious lunch of chicken enchiladas, rice and beans, salsa and chips while catching up with fellow Rotarians. 🌮😊

A big thank you to Robbie Harris and New Peoples Bank for helping us become more informed and better prepared to recognize scams and protect ourselves and our information!

The Rotary Club of Tazewell was proud to be part of this year’s Main Street Moments Festival! 🎉💙

At our Friday, July 17 meeting, fellow Rotarian Nate Thomas gave us a wonderful preview of the festival and shared information about all of the exciting activities taking place throughout the weekend.

Today, our club was honored to serve the community by setting up a Rotary booth and providing free bottled water to festival attendees. It was a great opportunity to connect with friends, neighbors, and visitors while sharing what Rotary is all about—Service Above Self.

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing volunteers who helped set up the booth and staffed it from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.:

📍 Rotary Club of Tazewell | July 10, 2026

We were honored to kick off the new Rotary year by welcoming District 7570 Governor Charlotte Whitted as the guest speaker at our first meeting of the 2026–2027 Rotary year.

Governor Whitted shared her vision for the year ahead, encouraged us to continue creating meaningful impact in our communities, and reminded us of the power of Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self. Her passion for service and leadership inspired our members as we begin an exciting year for our club.

Charlotte’s Rotary journey began right here with the Rotary Club of Tazewell in 2007 while serving as Executive Director of Historic Crab Orchard Museum & Pioneer Park. Since then, she has served as Club President, Area Governor, District Rotary Youth Exchange Chair, and now District Governor for 2026–2027. A dedicated supporter of The Rotary Foundation, she is a Paul Harris Fellow, Major Donor, member of the Paul Harris Society, and Bequest Society, and was recognized with the David Moreman Youth Encouragement Award in 2024–2025.

As our club celebrates 100 years of Service Above Self, we are grateful to have begun this milestone year with such an inspiring visit. Thank you, Governor Whitted, for your encouragement, leadership, and commitment to Rotary.

Friday marked the annual “passing of the gavel” when every Rotary club marks the official turnover from one Club President to the new Rotary years incoming President. Melissa Whited becomes the club’s 100th President and will usher in our clubs 100th year anniversary. Matthew Brandt was recognized as the outgoing President and given his “Past President” pin.

Our annual Tom O’Quinn Open golf tournament was held yesterday at Fincastle golf course. The weather was perfect, the teams were ready and excited….many thanks to all our hole sponsors and local businesses that provided a host of door prizes. Cruz’s, Bee Noodled, The Well Coffee Shop, Pizza Plus, Bee Alive, Lynne’s Therapeutic Massage, and Back of the Dragon. Congratulations to all the door prize winners, raffle winners, and team winners. A giant congratulations to Karen Mulkey for winning the $1,000 grand prize raffle!
