FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FRANKLIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE MAKES THIRD SCAM INTERCEPTION AND ARREST

FRANKFORT, KY — Sheriff Dwayne Depp announced another arrest involving an alleged scam targeting a Franklin County citizen. This marks the third successful scam interception and arrest by detectives with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

On September 3, 2026, detectives arrested Rehankumar D. Mekvan in connection with an alleged scam in which a Franklin County citizen could have lost approximately $235,000.

Mekvan was charged with:

-Engaging in Organized Crime
-Impersonating a Peace Officer
-Theft by Deception (Attempt)
-Obscuring the Identity of a Machine, $10,000 or More
-Tampering with Physical Evidence
-Failure to Wear a Seat Belt

I am extremely proud of our detectives and the outstanding work they continue to do to protect the citizens of Franklin County,” Sheriff Depp said. “This is our third scam interception and arrest, and it sends a clear message that we take crimes against our citizens seriously.”

Sheriff Depp reminds citizens that the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office will never call and demand money for missed court dates, jury duty, or to avoid arrest. Citizens should also be aware of technology scams involving individuals claiming to represent Microsoft, computer operating-system providers, or technical-support companies. These scammers may claim that your computer has been compromised, infected with a virus, or that your financial information is at risk.

“If you receive a suspicious call, do not provide personal or financial information and do not send money. Hang up and call the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office directly at 502-875-8740, or your local law enforcement agency” Sheriff Depp said. “We would much rather have you call us and verify something than become the victim of a scam.”

Sheriff Depp also thanked the Spencer County Sheriff Andrew Ware and his detective for their assistance in the investigation. “I sincerely appreciate their assistance and cooperation. Strong partnerships between law enforcement agencies help us better protect the communities we serve.”

Please remain vigilant, talk with your family members about these scams, and remember when in doubt, hang up and call us.

We aim to inform citizens about telephone and text scammers impersonating Deputies and Command officers who solicit money to prevent prosecution. Please note that we do not request payment to evade prosecution. In these scams, the caller, claiming to be a Deputy, Lieutenant, or another official from the Spencer County Kentucky Sheriff's Office, will assert that a crime has occurred or that jury duty has been neglected, and that sending money is necessary to avoid arrest. If you receive such a phone call, please hang up immediately and reach out to the Sheriff's Office at 502-477-3200 or our Dispatch non-emergency line at 502-477-5533.
