Well, another successful Fish Gift House was held at the Tawas United Methodist Church in December. It was certainly different this year from those we have held in the past, but it all came together and families received their goodies in time for Christmas.
In normal, non-Covid years the volunteers, known as runners, wear Christmas sweaters and hats, and the atmosphere with clients they are bringing through to do their shopping in all the areas is joyful. There is a room set up for books, one for teens, another for toys, rooms for coats and hats and gloves, a bonus room with a huge variety of interesting things, and a raffle room where everyone gets a chance to win wonderful items for their families. The clients get to choose the gifts based on the number in their family and go home happy and laden with gifts.
This year, because of the concerns for everyone’s safety, the Gift House was smaller and much quieter. Those who filled out applications provided the size of coats needed, the child’s interest in books, and the toys desired. There was no bonus room or raffle room, and gifts were picked out by the runners and a friendly Santa delivered them out to the cars as they drove up at their appointed times.
So many events have been cancelled or postponed this year and the wisdom of holding a Gift house was questioned, but the organizers were determined to make sure that families in need received gifts and coats for the kids for Christmas. Many thanks to those who planned so carefully and to the volunteers who worked hard to make sure the Gift House was a success. Let’s hope next year will be back to normal.
