I’m grateful for the group that came out to survey this massive dump site that spreads across land owned by the State and Taunton Development Corporation. I could have taken 100 more, many much worse.
Underneath all this trash is still a natural beauty pushing through. We can see the resilience of nature. Former roads and foundations have been reclaimed by trees, brush and plants - including the rare lady slippers we found.
Thanks to Representative Lisa Field, Mayor O’Connell, city staff, City Councilor Debra Botellio, representatives from Taunton Development Corporation, Department of Conservation, local and state police, and Karen Kullas from Taunton Ecology Awareness Movement for coming together to walk through the area and explore a plan for cleaning up and securing this area.
As I said to one of the folks I was walking with, there is enough work here for every one to get involved and we’ll need a panoramic lens for the group photos.
While the surface clean up will be quite an endeavor, the impact on the old Dever wells is, as yet, unknown.
