🚨 WHEN TO CALL 911

If there is an immediate threat to life or property.
• Downed/arcing electrical wires
• A fire or electrical fire
• A strong odor of natural gas/suspected gas leak
• A utility emergency creating an immediate hazard
• Any situation where someone is in immediate danger

Never approach or touch a downed power line. Stay away and keep others away. If roadways are flooded turn around don’t proceed through the water.

Companies are returning to service following a smoke in a business call at Country Side Plaza.

Engine 74 and Rescue 74 arrived simultaneously, and crews began investigating the source of the smoke. After further investigation, it was determined that a battery-powered sweeper had caught fire during the overnight hours.

Crews checked for extension and assisted the business owner.

🔋 LITHIUM-ION BATTERY SAFETY

Lithium-ion batteries power many items we use every day, including cleaning equipment, power tools, e-bikes, phones, laptops, and other rechargeable devices. When damaged, defective, improperly charged, or overheated, these batteries can create a serious fire hazard.

A few important safety reminders:

• Always use the manufacturer-approved charger and battery.
• Never charge damaged, swollen, cracked, or unusually hot batteries.
• Avoid charging battery-powered equipment near combustible materials or exits.
• When possible, avoid leaving larger battery-powered equipment charging unattended or overnight.
• Stop using a battery immediately if you notice excessive heat, swelling, leaking, an unusual odor, popping/hissing sounds, or smoke.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging, storage, and disposal.
• Never place lithium-ion batteries in regular trash or recycling unless specifically permitted by your local disposal program.

⚠️ If a lithium-ion battery begins smoking or catches fire, evacuate the area and call 911. Do not put yourself at risk trying to handle or move the battery.

Incidents like this are an important reminder that battery-powered equipment can pose a fire risk even when a building is unoccupied.
