PUBLIC RELEASE | FORGERY

On July 17, 2024 at approximately 5:28 pm, the Tarrant Police Department was dispatched to Mr. Payroll (Tarrant Check Cashing) located at 1113 Pinson Street within Tarrant, Ala. regarding a female attempting to cash a fraudulent check in the amount of $2,325.00.

The owner informed that the business had been provided with a check allegedly issued by Selective Demolition Services, LLC. The business owner informed that he located correct contact information for Selective Demolition Services, LLC. who informed that the check was indeed fake. That business owner also informed that Destiney Shuntay Martha James ("James") attempted to cash the same check at an alternate location in Birmingham, Alabama. According to James, she had been given the check by an individual who no longer worked for the business according to Selective Demolition Services, LLC. That individual intended to receive $500.00 if James was successful.

Regarding the continuing investigation, Rodney Lanard Harrell (“Harrell”) was identified as the subject who produced said false checks following his termination, gave the check to James, and had replaced the businesses phone number on several checks with his own; as he would be the subject verifying the checks rather than Selective Demolition Services, LLC.

Although this continuing investigation was closed on July 19, 2024 by Chief Wendell Major, it was re-opened to complete this investigation. In consultation with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, Harrell is charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Third Degree (Class D Felony), Attempted Theft of Property in the Second Degree (Class D Felony), and Conspiracy (Class A Misdemeanor). Harrell maintains a total bond of $31,000.

If you are aware of the whereabouts of Harrell, contact your local authorities. If you have any additional information regarding this incident, please contact the assigned investigator, Sergeant Williamson, at (205) 948-3218 or [email protected]. Offenders are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

PUBLIC RELEASE | IDENTITY THEFT, ETC.

On July 18, 2024 at approximately 5:24 pm, the Tarrant Police Department was dispatched to Mr. Payroll (Tarrant Check Cashing) located at 1113 Pinson Street within Tarrant, Ala. regarding a subject attempting to cash a fraudulent check in the amount of $6,014.99 using a fake driver's license.

Upon arrival, Officer Stevens was provided with the purported check by the business owner along with a false temporary driver's license depicting the suspect, Amanda Joann Akins ("Akins"). Although Akins' photograph was depicted on the temporary Alabama driver's license, it bore the name, driver's license number, and date of birth of a black female. According to Akins, she was provided with the documents to cash the $6,014.99 check by an alternate subject; which she would receive $3,000 of the funds if she had been successful. However, Officer Stevens placed her under arrest and transported her to the Tarrant Police Department jail instead. The investigation revealed that Akins did not know the subject whose information she was utilizing, had no relationship with the bank indicated, and Akins maintained a list of felony and misdemeanor warrants including three warrants for Robbery in the First Degree, two warrants for Identity Theft, and two warrants for Theft of Property in the Second Degree.

In consultation with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, Akins is charged with Identity Theft (Class B Felony), Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree (Class C Felony), Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Third Degree (Class D Felony), and Attempted Theft of Property in the First Degree (Class C Felony). Akins was transferred to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office jail where she maintains a total bond of $100,000. If you have any additional information regarding this incident, please contact the assigned investigator, Sergeant Williamson, at (205) 948-3218. Offenders are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
