PUBLIC RELEASE | PREMATURELY CLOSED CASE
On June 21, 2023 at approximately 5:49 pm, the Tarrant Police Department received a report of a burglary with a theft of property occurring within the 1800 block of Hoke Avenue within Tarrant, Ala.
According to one of the victims, a disabled family member was asleep inside the residence when the suspect, who was a previous “handyman” at the residence, broke into the home. The victim informed that his Dell laptop, with provided serial number, was stolen from inside the residence during the burglary along with a pressure washer. The investigation, occurring over a year later on July 8, 2024, revealed that James Lee McCarthy ("McCarthy"), the mentioned "handyman", thereafter pawned the stolen laptop (matching serial number) at a local pawn shop within Birmingham, Alabama two days after the alleged burglary along with jewelry potentially taken from the residence. Due to a delayed investigation, the Tarrant Police Department has been unable to recover the victim’s property at this time.
Although this case was reported by Chief Wendell Major (“Major") on June 28, 2023, and closed on July 2, 2023 by Major without assigning this case for investigation, it was re-opened on February 16, 2024 and July 8, 2024. In consultation with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, McCarthy is charged with Burglary in the Second Degree (Class B Felony) and Theft of Property in the Third Degree (Class D Felony). McCarthy, when arrested, will maintain a total bond of $40,000.
If you are aware of the whereabouts of McCarthy, contact your local authorities. If you have any additional information regarding this incident, please contact the assigned investigator, Sergeant Williamson, at (205) 948-3218. Offenders are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
