Every June, we look forward to these delicate flowers dangling from the trees throughout the swamp.

It's our Tampa Butterfly Orchid (Encyclia tampensis)!
This epiphytic is found most often on tree branches that overhang seasonally wet areas.

Fun fact- the specific epithet, tampensis, refers to the first plant that was collected and described, which happened somewhere in the Tampa Bay area in 1847!

💦Have you heard about Lara's Stormwater Stewardship Month?!💦She has a whole lineup of programs for you to learn about this very important topic.

Truth is, most of us don't think about stormwater until it's literally in our front yard, or worse, our homes. Understanding more about stormwater both on the water quality side of things and water quantity side of things can help you become a better water steward.

We would love to see you at one of Lara's upcoming programs. An Eastern Coral Snake (Micrurus fulvius) safely crossing the road at Brooker Creek Preserve! 🐍💚

It is always a treat to see these beauties! They are quite secretive and often underground or under logs and leaf litter. Coral Snakes are one of the four venomous snakes you may encounter in central Florida and the only one in the cobra (Elapidae) family.

Video credit goes to our Ranger Mary 👏 This is a great reminder for everyone to use caution while driving through the Preserve. Far too often, we unfortunately find dead snakes in the road after they've been run over.
