Tarkio Police K-9 The Tarkio PD K9 Unit serves and protects roughly 1,500 citizens of Tarkio, Missouri.

The Tarkio PD K9 Unit is part of the Tarkio Police Department in Tarkio, Atchison County, Missouri that serves the City of Tarkio. The Tarkio PD K9 Unit serves and protects the roughly 1,500 citizens of Tarkio; as well as the surrounding area/towns and their respective populations within Atchison County, Missouri. Atchison County is roughly 550 square miles with a total population of around 5,685

citizens. Our K9 Unit has also been frequently requested for assistance in multiple surrounding counties and their respective police agencies that request assistance as needed. The Tarkio PD K9 Unit strives to serve and protect all the citizens of Tarkio and Atchison County, as well as the multiple counties and police agencies that request assistance when needed. The Tarkio PD K9 Unit strives to be in the best shape and the most well trained K9 Unit in the area to be able to serve and protect the community and its surrounding areas we serve.

HIRING REQUIREMENTS HAVE CHANGED:

The City of Tarkio Missouri is accepting applications and resumes for the position of full-time police officer. Tarkio is a rural agricultural and growing wind farm community with a population of approximately 1,500. Tarkio is nestled in the Bluffs along east side of the Missouri River, west of Maryville Missouri (the of home of Northwest Missouri State University), and an hour south of Omaha, NE. The former Tarkio college has re-opened its doors as Tarkio Tech, and is actively growing a student body.

Applicants are expected to be self-motivated, professional, and willing to be a member of the community for which you are trusted to serve and protect. Full-time officers have assigned take-home patrol vehicles for rapid response to emergency situations. Residency requirements set forth by policy allow for residency within a 5-minute response time.

Required qualifications are as follows. Must be 21 years of age and older, have a high school diploma or equivalent and able to complete a 6 month paid with benefits Missouri Police Officer Standard of Training course, or possess a current Missouri POST certification, or equivalent. POST or non-POST candidates must be able to pass a criminal background investigation. Have or able to obtain a valid Missouri Driver’s license. Residential requirement, reside within city limits or 5-minute response time.

Starting salary is for non-POST or Cadet Officer start at $38K. POST certified applicants will begin at $41K and negotiable based upon work experience. All uniforms and equipment are purchased by the department.

Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi traveled to Salina, Kansas for the 2024 Heart of America Police Dog Association (HAPDA) Certification Week on September 29th through October 4th.

We proudly announce that Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi passed their certification with flying colors! Not only did they pass, but they are coming home with 2 new certifications!

Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi are now certified to conduct article/evidence searches and is now certified to locate fentanyl during narcotics deployments.

To continue to pile on the good news, Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi were one of two dogs, out of approximately 25 K9 Units, to be nominated to compete in the 2024 HAPDA Master Track. The HAPDA Master Tracker Award is awarded to a K9 Unit that exemplifies masterful ability in tracking.

It’s with great enthusiasm we announce that Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi won the 2024 HAPDA Master Track Award. Please know that this is the 2nd time in 3 years that Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi won this award!

Please congratulate Officer Dorrel and K9 Hemi on their very successful award winning 2024 HAPDA Certification Week.

These new certifications, along with the other certifications, are crucial to the fight of keeping the citizens of Tarkio and Atchison County safe against the epidemic of illegal narcotic drug use.

On 7/27/2024, the Tarkio K9 Unit held the 4th Annual Tarkio PD K9 Benefit Golf Tournament at the Tarkio Golf Club. The tournament was an absolute success and all of the auction items were sold at the completion of the tournament!! Below is the team names and final results for the two flights.

There is still plenty of spots available if you wish to golf in the tournament. If you cant golf or cant make it for another reason, here is another chance for you to help support the Tarkio PD K9 Unit.

Please place your online bids by commenting on the following photos or by sending a private message to this page. Each photo will have a description of the item and the starting bid price.

All online bids will close at the start of the auction after the golf tournament concludes on July 27th. If you wish to join the auction in person, please be at the Tarkio Golf Club roughly around 2pm, as play should be wrapping up around then. Please know if the tournament is running ahead of schedule, the auction will start regardless shortly after the last team has turned in their scorecard.
