The South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, located in Rockland County New York, provides ambulance and emergency medical services to the hamlets of Blauvelt, Orangeburg, Palisades, Sparkill and Tappan in the Town of Orangetown. SOAC responds to other parts of the town, county and to New Jersey as per a mutual aid agreement with our neighbors. SOAC is on call for the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and responds to approximately 2000 emergency medical calls a year. We are a BLS agency and are responsible for all emergency medical transport for the above hamlets. SOAC also provides scheduled non-emergency transports for community residents as well as stand-by coverage at a wide variety of sporting events and public affairs. The Corps was born at an informal meeting at a local Sparkill restaurant (now the Mountain House) in March, 1957, by eight members of the community. The community members had just witnessed a serious auto accident and a significant amount of time pass before an ambulance arrived to provide first aid to the victims and transportation to the hospital. The South Orangetown community did not have its own ambulance service so it relied on ambulance service from Nyack Community Ambulance Corps, which they had provided faithfully since 1939. The community members discussed their concerns and recognized the need for having a community based volunteer ambulance service located in South Orangetown so they didn't have to rely on ambulances coming from neighboring Towns. After three monthly meetings, the Corps was formally organized in July 1957 and officially chartered by the State of New York as a non-profit membership corporation on September 20, 1957.

If you've passed our station recently you're probably wondering what is going on. Well here it is! We're under construction! As our community has grown, so are we. To help suit our growing needs and growing community, and keep us moving to the future, we are putting an addition on the station and renovating the existing parts. This growth will allow us to keep all of our vehicles protected inside with room for more ambulances, as well as a new crew room, training spaces, gym and more! Keep an eye out for more progress updates as well as a future open house and rededication just in time for our 70th anniversary. That's right, 70 years of neighbors helping neighbors.

Construction has no impact on our operations, we are still fully available 24/7, however we'd like to say thank you to our neighbors for their patience during this project. We know all of the street parking may be disruptive but this project is almost done!

Thank you RPS / RMC lieutenant Liam Mallon for coming to our station last night for some training. We did an orientation with new trainees first, and then Lt Mallon did a training on ALS equipment we can assist with on calls with our Paramedic partners. These skills and knowledge will help our new members get a head start on their training and provide better care for our community.

Congratulations to our 9 RC EMS Academy graduates on completing the summer accelerated EMT program and practical exam. These 9 students spent 8 weeks of hard work and dedication to get through a course that normally takes at least 12 weeks. Up next is the state written exam. Congratulations to Tara Carolan, Jane Duffy, Shannon Fegan, Lilly Hasenfus, Sophia Lymbertos, Aaron Martinez, Leybin Morales, Emmitt Passarotti and Alice Temple. Our graduates are and almost ready to hit the road.

Thank you to Supervisor Teresa Kenny and the Town of Orangetown Board for helping us honor our volunteers at last night's board meeting. Without the dedication and hard work of our volunteers, we couldn't have grown from one ambulance in 1957 to our state of the art fleet of 4 ambulances, special operations division, youth division and our ongoing building expansion today. The hard work, hundreds to nearly a thousand hours put in individually is what keeps us going, serves our community, and ultimately saves lives. Many of these honors last night were for actions that directly resulted in a life saved in our community. We also honored the hours our volunteers put in, as well as two volunteers for their 40 and 45 years of service to the South Orangetown community. These volunteers are what makes South Orangetown great, and what makes us all SOAC Strong.

Today South Orangetown crews and rehab unit responded to the scene of a structure fire with hazmat involvement to provide MCI support and firefighter rehabilitation. At a prolonged incident like this, and when hazmat is involved, firefighter rehabilitation is critical to reduce injuries and catch medical conditions early before they become a problem. Our rehab tent setup includes a dedicated HVAC unit to keep the tent cool, allowing the firefighters to cool off while being evaluated, reducing stress and helping get them back to work. Additional volunteers also responded to our station to staff extra ambulances in South Orangetown as well.
