VGHS students finished strong with the 25-26 school year! Those that met specific marks in attendance, behavior and grades were able to have the opportunity to attend a trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park and the hot springs in Hooper

This was a great trip with bluebird skies, outdoor recreation, dipping in the hot springs, and a night camping under the stars! Great work, Team!

As we roll through our last week of the year, our students have had the opportunity to participate in another schoolwide 4PBL experience, focusing on Community and Stewardship. This included partnering up with Taos County Solid Waste to pick up debris in the VGHS community, connecting with Stray Hearts Animal Shelter and utilizing guidance and support from our partners at Green Schools National Network

Students have been impressive with their ability to lean in and engage in community work, all the way up to the last days of an awesome school year!

May is a busy but great time as we rock through milestones and close out the school year. Yesterday, our 10th and 12th grade students completed their Passage presentations, and they collectively crushed it! Such a cool experience for them and for our family, staff and VGHS community! Next up, we have our Celebration of Learning on Wednesday, May 27th, and our VGHS Class of 2026 GRADUATION on Friday, May 29th. Lot of great things happening 🐦‍🔥🐦‍🔥. Have a great 3-Day weekend, VGHS community!

We are SO lucky to have such awesome humans and educators in the building, leading our students every single day. Teaching is an amazing profession, but definitely not for the faint of heart. The 2025-26 VGHS staff is exceptionally awesome!! The flexibility, the encouragement, the high expectations with supports that appropriately push and guide VGHS students to grow in all facets (academically, socially, emotionally, maturity). We can’t say ‘Thank You’ enough to our awesome educators, but we certainly will try. Without their grit, dedication, love and support, we wouldn’t be able to do all of the place-based learning and have all of the experiences that make our school unique. So, a huge THANK YOU to our awesome educators!!

VGHS community, please make sure to let our awesome educators know how much you think of them :)

Vista Grande High School's Jennie Begley handles both Culinary Arts and PE, and this Semester she connected the PE class with and suggested that the freshman PE class walk to Stray Hearts and help by walking dogs and getting involved with other animal-related needs and activities.

But there’s more to walking a population of dogs with various issues and needs than just putting them on the end of a leash and heading out the door. So, the knowledgeable professionals at the shelter taught the students about the ups and downs and ins and outs of working with dogs that have different needs and personalities. The animals needed to be safe and the kids had to be safe as well.

Each week (pretty much regardless of the weather) students from Vista Grande’s freshman class head to Stray Hearts. They start with a healthy walk of nearly a mile to their destination. Then another healthy walk with a leashed dog in tow.

Some additional activities that the students engage in include playing with dogs who are not in good enough shape for a walk or playing with and socializing puppies and kittens.

A few students commented on their Stray Hearts experience:

“I had a great day of fun, and it felt good for me to see the animals happy.” Derek

“It has been very cool to work with the shelter staff and animals. Cornell”

“I say that Stray Hearts is a great dog and cat shelter. They take very good care of and really look out for the animals. All the staff treat the animals with respect,” Danny

Jennie added, “Our freshman PE students are truly excited and grateful for the opportunity to volunteer at the local animal shelter. We deeply appreciate the shelter staff for welcoming this partnership with openness and trust. Through this experience students are helping care for animals in need while developing patience, compassion and quiet leadership. Special Thanks to Sara Jean Gray for putting the story together and to for the photo! And, special thanks to for being a willing community collaborator!

Today’s STEM U activity brought our 9th graders to the Construction Lab and Culinary Arts Department

Students were introduced to different classes UNM-Taos offers in these areas and also how that connects to job opportunities in Taos County as well as the state of New Mexico. Students were able to produce a cool phone holder in the Construction Lab and design (and, eat) their own ice cream in Culinary Arts. Stoked and grateful to have these great post-secondary and dual enrollment opportunities in our community!

This reel shows some highlights of the ‘fun’ things we’ve been doing and learning over the past month. The ‘fun’ shows up in these pictures, but the hard work and growth happens everyday. Attendance truly does matter, in school and in work. Consistently showing up, even when you’re tired and/or just not feeling it is a huge component of growth and maturity. SO PROUD of our students that are doing this! Over half of our students are in either Tier I (95%+) or Tier II (90%+) attendance. That is awesome!! And, let’s keep growing it. Teamwork really does make the dream work!! 🐦‍🔥🐦‍🔥🐦‍🔥🐦‍🔥
