The exhibition title for Holly Sievers’ work is drawn from Thomas Forster’s 1813 publication Researches About Atmospheric Phenomena, a book that made weather and light understandable through accessible, non-technical language. Heavily used by John Constable, whose paintings studied clouds in motion, shifting light, and wind moving across the landscape, the text reflects a shared fascination with the atmosphere. The title points to the exhibition’s central idea: the sky not as backdrop, but as subject.

In this painting by B. J. O. Nordfeldt, clusters of willow trees surround a small pool of water, a precious resource in the high desert environment. Growing near streams and irrigation channels, willows have long signaled life-sustaining water sources. Indigenous communities traditionally used willow branches in weaving, construction, and everyday tools, drawing on the plant’s resilience and versatility.

"Female N**e, Seated," 1913, by Nicolai Fechin, captures the subject mid-blink. It's less of a life drawing and more of a glimpse of time passing.

Goat herding has long been part of daily life in northern New Mexico. Well suited to the region's dry landscape, goats provided milk, meat, and hides for rural households and became essential to communities where farming often was difficult. Barbara Latham often included scenes like these in her work, reflecting the traditions and rhythms of life in the Southwest.

In "Russian House" (ca. 1910), Fechin uses color and structure to unify forms, evoking the essence of a place rather than its exact appearance. Painted in Russia, the canvas was later removed from its stretcher bars to facilitate transport during Fechin’s move to the United States.
