Friends, we have had to delay our Season opening for this year due to the condition of the harbor at Tangier Island. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District promised to have the harbor dredged by May 1st so we felt safe announcing our open date as May 23rd. However, they still have not started the work and are not sure when they can get to it.

Dredging the harbor is necessary every year so that boats and cruise ships can safely navigate the more shallow water near the dock.

We have reluctantly made the decision to postpone our 2026 Season open date to July 1st.

We apologize for the inconvenience but there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. We are totally dependent, as are the island folk, on the services of the USACE.

ATTENTION - TANGIER RESIDENTS

A film crew with YAP Films, will be diving and filming the ruins of Fort Albion this week. They are inviting any residents who are interested, to join them at Veteran's Park, at the end of the airport (the firepit), this coming Wednesday, April 29th, at 3:00 p.m. - for a memorial service for the British soldiers who were interred at Fort Albion. There will be a member of the British Royal Navy there, who will say a few words in memoriam, and lay a wreath.

The Commonwealth of Virginia Commission on Local Government & The Berkley Group will be on island today (March 26, 2026) to hold a public meeting regarding the current financials of the Town of Tangier and the results of the Berkeley Groups findings of the financials for the Town of Tangier. They will also be outlining the next steps involved in getting the town out of the "distressed locality" status. The meeting starts at 1:30pm at the Benson Educational Building on Tangier. The meeting will also be available via Microsoft Teams meeting and the link to the meeting and the meeting information can be found below should you wish to attend it virtually.
