FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING

Monday, May 4th - Friday, May 8th. The City’s Water Department will be Flushing fire hydrants in the areas listed below. City hydrants are flushed regularly to ensure they are in working order for fire protection, and to remove sediment in pipes. These sediments, which do not pose a health concern, are comprised mostly of minerals which have accumulated over time. The annual flushing program helps to keep fresh and clear water throughout the distribution system. Customers may notice a slight drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration. Restaurants and those using washing machines are cautioned to check their water supply. If tap water does become discolored, turn on several cold-water faucets to run for a short time until the water runs clear. Using more than one faucet allows the water to clear faster.

This year, our nation will celebrate a historic milestone, the 250th birthday of America. Here in Taneytown, we’re joining communities across the country to honor this once-in-a-generation anniversary with a full season of events, activities, and opportunities to come together as a community.

Our first event in our Stamps Across Taneytown program was this past weekend, the Easter Egg Hunt. It was a wonderful start to the program! Families who stopped by the America 250th table received their passport and collected their very first stamp. It was great to see so many residents already joining in on the fun.

Didn’t get a chance to check in at the 250th table? No worries! There will be plenty more opportunities to participate throughout the year. Simply attend any of the participating events, check in at the 250th table, collect stamps, and earn prizes along the way.

Rewards you can earn as you participate:
3 Stamps – Commemorative America 250 Coin
5 Stamps – Community Gift Card
7 Stamps – Official Taneytown 250th T-Shirt

We invite everyone to join us at our upcoming events, support our community, and be a part of this historic celebration.

Pick up your passport at the next event and start collecting stamps. Once you’ve collected enough stamps for a prize, stop by city hall to redeem!

December 8, 2008: On this day in Taneytown’s history, the city took an important step toward protecting its historic core. Ordinance No. 8-2008 was adopted, establishing design standards for the Old Town area and creating the framework that would later evolve into today’s design review process.

This moment signaled a shift in how Taneytown approached preservation. For the first time, the city set clear expectations for safeguarding the architectural character of its downtown, giving future leaders a modern tool to balance growth with heritage. The work started on this date continues to shape preservation policy and community discussions today. (image is ai generated)
