⭐Supporting Scouting America⭐

State Attorney Suzy Lopez joined the Scouting America Luncheon in Plant City this week as the keynote speaker.

Did you know that 40% of Explorer Scouts go on to become first responders? This program is building our future leaders, and we were grateful to be there to recognize not only the young people stepping up, but also the parents and Scout leaders who are guiding them along the way.

🚨Jury Delivers Verdict in Death Penalty Case Just Before Midnight🚨

A jury has found Jean Pierre Ojeda Salazar, 27, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his girlfriend and her 14-year-old daughter. The crime happened in November 2023 at the victims’ apartment in Tampa after the couple got into an argument.

“This case is heartbreaking on every level. A woman lost her life, and her teenage daughter was murdered while courageously trying to protect her. Today’s verdicts hold the defendant accountable for these horrific acts and delivers a measure of justice for a family whose lives have been changed forever,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Jurors heard from Diana Calderon, a friend who lived with the victim and her two children at The Lodge at Hidden River apartments on Riveredge Drive. Calderon testified that she saw Ojeda Salazar stabbing his girlfriend on the bed when the victim’s 14-year-old daughter came into the room to defend her. Ojeda Salazar proceeded to stab the teenager to death before Calderon ran out of the apartment to seek help.

While Ojeda Salazar did not take the stand, defense attorneys told the jury that the defendant was responsible for stabbing both victims but claims it was a domestic incident that got out of hand. The defense told jurors that it was a case of manslaughter, not murder. But the jurors disagreed.

The case now moves to the penalty phase where the same jurors will decide if Ojeda Salazar should be sentenced to life in prison or receive the death penalty. Assistant State Attorneys Lindsey Hodges and Sheri Maxim successfully prosecuted this case. The Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office represented the defendant.

🚨 Man Known as "Peanut" Stands Trial for Murder of Former Boss🚨

Terry Stephens, known by friends as "Peanut," is on trial for the murder of his former boss.

Prosecutors say Stephens orchestrated a plan to rob and kill the victim, who had previously fired him. Stephens and two codefendants asked to buy ma*****na from the victim to find his location.

When they met, prosecutors say Stephens and codefendant Eric Wallace ambushed the victim, shooting and killing him while taking his ma*****na.

Wallace was convicted earlier this year and sentenced to life in prison. Stephens' trial is expected to wrap up this week.

🌯 Cubanitos & Convos: SVU Edition ☕

Today, our interns got a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most challenging and important areas of prosecution during our latest professional development lunch series. (And because we're in Tampa, would it be complete without cubanitos?)

Chief of SVU Christine Boulos and Deputy Chief Joe Kudia shared what it takes to prosecute cases involving child abuse, sexual battery, and other crimes that impact some of the most vulnerable members of our community. They also spoke about their own career journeys and experiences that shaped their paths in public service.

One of the best parts of our internship program is connecting students with prosecutors who are doing this work every day. These conversations give our interns a deeper understanding of the justice system while helping them explore the many paths a legal career can take.

A big thank you to our SVU team for taking the time to invest in the next generation of legal professionals!
