Mount Tamalpais State Park

Mount Tamalpais State Park Welcome to California State Parks at Mount Tamalpais! Enjoy hikings, accessible trails, wildlife viewing, and spectacular vistas from a majestic mountain.
(661)

North of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Tamalpais rises majestically from the heart of Marin County. Mount Tamalpais captures our attention with its sweeping hillsides cloaked with chaparral-covered ridges, grasslands, and oak woodlands. Deep canyons filled with solemn redwood groves intersect these ridges and slopes to create a diverse environment for a wide array of plant and animal s

pecies. The breathtaking panorama from Mount Tamalpais' 2,571-foot peak includes the Farallon Islands 25 miles out to the sea, the Marin County hills, San Francisco Bay, the East Bay, and Mount Diablo. Spring and summer temperatures are warm, with average highs in the 70s and 80s. Fall and winter can be cool, with temperatures in the 50s; fog is common. The park has approximately 60 miles of trails, picnic areas, 2 tent-only campgrounds, a group campground, a horse campground, and cabins for rent. Camping and fires are permitted only in designated areas. Horses and bicycles are allowed only on fire roads and posted hiking trails. Leashed dogs are allowed ONLY on paved roads in developed areas, family campgrounds and picnic areas. Dogs must be confined to a tent or vehicle at night. The park is open everyday from 7AM to sunset. Check in at the Pantoll parking lot for further info and maps.

A busy weekend on the mountain!

Forecasted highs for Mt Tam this weekend are in the low 70s, but expect temperature inversion, with temps at least 10 degrees cooler on the beaches and at least 10 degrees warmer at the peak. Light winds and mostly sunny skies (after morning fog clears — which it might not at some of the beaches on Saturday) are also in the forecast.

The cooler weather in the forecast will be good for the events happening this weekend! Expect parking and traffic impacts as the Mountain Play is being performed both days this weekend and the Dipsea Race is on Sunday. Morning traffic on Panoramic Highway and Muir Woods Road will be heavily impacted by the Dipsea, along with travel on that trail.

For park events, we'll have both a hike and a walk Saturday morning. The volunteer-guided hike will start at Bootjack at 9am and our State Parks Week climate walk will start at 9am at Pantoll. Sunday morning, we'll have our usual hot beverage program at Pantoll.

Enjoy the continued wildflowers, look out for the horse flies, and have fun!

Watercolors in the warm sunshine!

The warm weather deterred many registered participants from joining our "Watercolor Walk" State Parks Week event (for the "Nourish Your Health & Well-Being" theme). Those that braved the relative heat, however, enjoyed fine views and had options for shade. It was a lovely, artistic time with fresh breezes, fine views, and birdsong!

Thank you to our One Tam partners for staff and material support!

Summer evenings can be a magical time in the forest! Human visitation drops and bird & other wildlife visitation picks back up. Not to mention that the light through the trees is stunning!

Consider an evening walk along one of our wooded trails sometime soon!

Can’t make our State Parks Week watercolor event? Well, we put out some watercolor sets every Sunday morning at our Perk Up in the Park hot beverage program at Pantoll and whenever we have a Saturday Discovery Table. Hang out and paint, then either take your artwork home or leave it to join our growing mini gallery!

Did we forget to mention that the Mountain Play is starting this weekend?

Sunday will be the official opening performance of their production of the Wizard of Oz! You could enjoy musical theater in the beautiful outdoors!

If you’ve got more trail-based plans tomorrow, just keep in mind there will be more traffic on upper mountain roads and limited non-play parking around Rock Spring and Mountain Theater.

Have fun!

A variable weekend ahead!

The weekend will start nicely cooler than the past couple of days, with highs in the mid sixties to low seventies, but with some gusty winds on Saturday. Skies are set to be sunny!

More anticipated wildflowers are in glorious bloom now, like some leopard lilies on Bootjack Trail. Check out Wednesday’s post for what’s hot right now!

A mountain bike event might cause moderate trail & traffic impacts on Saturday on Dias Ridge Trail, Panoramic Highway, Old Stage Road, Deer Park Fire Road, & Coast View (and other trails & roads outside the State Park).

Saturday at 7pm, we’ll have a campfire program at Pantoll and Sunday features the usual morning hot beverage program.

Have fun!

Fog in the forest + sunshine in the chaparral = lots of flowers to enjoy!

However you might have been feeling with the recent highly variable weather, Mt Tam’s wildflowers seem to have enjoyed it immensely! There are so many colors, new and returning, all over the mountain.

Featured blooms: leopard lilies, harvest brodiaea (in a lovely cluster), yellow mariposa lily, Mount Tamalpais bristly jewelflower, canyon liveforever, small-leaf monkeyflower, serpentine monardella, goldwire, common wooly sunflowers, golden-yarrow, winecup clarkia, white brodiaea, north Californian Indian pink, western starflower, Ithuriel’s spear, toyon, Solomon’s plume, and wavy-leafed soap plant.

A warmer weekend, but who knows what sun & clouds we might have!

Saturday might have morning fog, but it’s not supposed to be up to the top of the mountain. Otherwise, sunny skies and highs in the high 60s to low 70s are in the forecast, with slightly gusty winds on Saturday and light winds Sunday.

Saturday evening, we encourage you to head to Samuel P. Taylor SP for their showing of the Giants Rising documentary.

Sunday, we’ll have our usual Sunday morning hot beverage program at Pantoll.

Take care!

Tower of terror? 🕷️

If you suffer from arachnophobia, then maybe so! This is the “doorway” to the burrow of a California turret spider. Using their silk to hold together bits of plant matter and soil, these medium-sized (roughly between a half and three quarters of an inch) are fantastic little builders. Look out for their turrets along the trail! This one is along Upper Old Mine.

Time to take it easy!

Especially if you had a busy holiday weekend, now is a great time to take your time. Be like this snail and take your time and really take it your surroundings!
