Tribal Hazard Mitigation Plan Open for Public Comment

The purpose of Tribal Hazard Mitigation is to develop a long‑term strategy by which tribal governments can reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. Hazard mitigation is defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as “any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from hazards". Hazard mitigation is most effective when based on an inclusive, comprehensive and long-term plan that is developed before a disaster occurs. FEMA recognizes that the tribal right of self-governance substantiates that the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi is a sovereign entity. In order to receive funding from FEMA, for projects outside of disaster relief support, governing bodies are required to maintain Hazard mitigation plans.

Please share your thoughts and ideas to improve the Meskwaki Nation Hazard Mitigation Plan. It is open for public comment until Friday, November 13, 2026 at 4:30 PM. Thank you!

Be aware of the rain possibilities

Getting those costumes ready? 🎃 The trick-or-treat forecast for Friday and Saturday evenings is looking a bit damp, but thankfully mild! Rain and storm chances will be highest over central and southern Iowa up to 60% Friday evening with lower chances around 30 to 40% over northern Iowa. Saturday evening has just rain chances that are around 40 to 50%. So you might want to make sure your costume is poncho-compatible! 🌧️ The great news is that you definitely won't need to break out the winter coats or snow boots this year! 👻
