🔥 It’s getting hot in here… 🔥

It’s that time of year again! Due to the huge success of last summer’s stair closures on high heat index days, we will be implementing that protocol again this year.

Closing the stairs during extreme heat nearly cut our rescue numbers in half last year and helped keep both visitors and emergency responders safer.

We will once again post by 5:00 PM the evening before to let visitors know whether the stairs will be closed the following day.

You can find that information here:
https://gastateparks.org/TallulahGorge

On days when the stairs are closed:
• Hikers must exit the Hurricane Falls Stairs by noon.
• Gorge Floor permits will only be issued during the 8:00 AM permit class and expire at noon.

Please plan ahead, stay hydrated, and know your limits before hitting the trail. Your safety is our top priority!

One of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S., Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep. Visitors can hike rim trails to several overlooks, or they can obtain a permit to hike to the gorge floor.

“You must choose, but choose wisely…” -Grail Knight

Nobody wants slippy-sloppy. Or was it sloppy-slippy? Either way, taking the wrong footwear on the trail can quickly turn a fun hike into a painful one. Before heading out, research the route and terrain so you can choose the right gear for your adventure. Heels, open-toed shoes, and flip-flops are not ideal for hiking trails. For dirt or gravel trails, opt for sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes with good traction and ankle support. For paved or urban pathways, comfortable sneakers or tennis shoes are usually a better fit. Your feet will thank you later.

Now, to be fair, it's ! Flip-flops are great for beach parks, the pool, short walks, getting lost in the parking lot, or just embracing vacation mode. But rocky trails, waterfalls, uneven terrain, being chased by a herd of bison, mud, and steep inclines? That’s where things can get a little…well, slippy. Also sloppy.

Make good choices.

A little before & after magic!

A huge thank you to our amazing Friends Group for helping clean up the graffiti at the shelter at the top of the South Rim Stairs. Their dedication helps keep the park beautiful, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone who visits.

Special shoutout to Drew and Larry for putting in all the hard physical labor on this project. We truly appreciate your hard work and commitment!

Thank you to everyone who helps us protect and care for this special place.
