After The Flames: Suppression Repair Work on 2025 Fernadez Fire
- - - - -
In late March 2025, slightly more than a year ago, under similar drought and high fire danger conditions as today, the FERNADEZ FIRE burned 565 acres in northeastern Lake County, on national forest lands both within and adjacent to the southern portion of the Alexander Springs Wilderness, 5 miles west of Deland, FL.
The FERNADEZ FIRE was located approximately 4 miles southeast of the current SHELL FIRE. Tractor-plow units cut firelines through dense vegetation outside of the Wilderness in order to suppress the Fernadez Fire.
Following wildfire suppression and control, Resource Advisors (READs) assessed the impacts of the constructed plow lines, and prescribed repair work needed to return the natural and cultural resources impacted by the fire suppression efforts to their pre-fire conditions. This includes work on forest system roads, and work on firelines to restore the natural contour of the ground, reestablish vegetation, prevent erosion, and block vehicles from travelling off designated routes.
Following approval of the Suppression Repair Plan by the USDA Forest Service, work is currently underway by a crew from Gulf Coast Heavy Equipment and Forestry, a federal contractor based in Eastpoint,FL, using a medium-sized excavator under the supervision of a USFS Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB). Wildland fire work continues long after the flames are extinquished.

As of today, June 8, 2026, the SHELL FIRE within and adjacent to the northern portion of the Alexander Springs Wilderness, remains at 2,822 acres with 70% containment. Some isolated areas of smoldering and smoking vegetation remain deep in the fire's interior and crews continue to monitor and patrol the fire daily.
