The Epilepsy Agency of the Big Bend is proud to serve as a sponsoring organization of the National Plan for Epilepsy Campaign, a bipartisan effort to improve epilepsy research, access to care, public awareness, and quality of life for people living with epilepsy and their families.

Led by congressional epilepsy champions in both the U.S. House and Senate and supported by more than 120 epilepsy organizations nationwide, the campaign seeks to advance a comprehensive National Plan for Epilepsy and strengthen the nation's response to this common neurological condition.

As temperatures continue to rise during the Florida summer, it’s important to understand how extreme heat can impact people living with epilepsy. Florida is located within America’s “Epilepsy Belt,” and research suggests that frequent exposure to temperatures above 95°F may increase seizure risk for some individuals.

This month’s newsletter features the article, “How Climate Change May Impact Genetic Conditions and Certain Types of Epilepsies,” which explores the impact of rising temperatures and climate abnormalities. To read the full article, click the link below!

At EABB, we believe education and awareness are essential parts of epilepsy care and safety. That’s why we offer a free monthly Zoom education series focused on seizure safety, trigger awareness, and daily living skills. Individuals with epilepsy, family members, friends, caregivers, and community members are all welcome to join to learn seizure first aid, identify potential triggers, and gain practical tools for everyday life. To join, please contact Gabriela Pineda at [email protected] or visit www.eabb.org.

Climate change may worsen symptoms of heat‑sensitive genetic variants, making some neurological and epileptic conditions more likely to appear or intensify during heatwaves. Researchers identify “calortypic” genes that raise hidden vulnerability.

It’s Baseball Season! ⚾

Hat’s off to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Freddie Freeman for helping create an unforgettable moment for a teenager living with epilepsy.

Stories like this remind us how meaningful visibility, kindness, and support can be for people and families impacted by epilepsy. Small moments of encouragement and inclusion can leave a lasting impact and help individuals feel seen, supported and empowered.

This month’s newsletter featured the inspiring story of how Dodger’s first baseman Freddie Freeman helped grant a special wish for teen Kaylyn Alves, who had the opportunity to throw a ceremonial first pitch before the game. Click the link below to read more about her unforgettable experience.

At EABB, we are passionate about empowering teens and young adults living with epilepsy by helping them build confidence, connection, and community. To learn about our student program and how to get involved, please contact Gabriela Pineda at [email protected].

“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

That’s the Special Olympics Athlete Oath, and it clearly resonates with Panama City resident Rachael Riccobene, who competed this weekend in cycling at the Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games in Orlando.

Since connecting with EABB in 2019, Rachael has made remarkable strides in living well with epilepsy – growing in confidence, independence, and self-belief, ultimately feeling empowered to pursue competitive cycling through the Special Olympics.

This year, Rachael earned two silver medals, adding to an already extraordinary record that includes eight gold medals over five years of competition.

Her courage, consistency, heart, and perseverance continue to inspire everyone around her. Congratulations, Rachael. We couldn’t be more proud! 💛

Caregivers are often the quiet backbone of epilepsy care; providing support, advocacy, and comfort every single day. But while they care for others, their own emotional, physical, and mental well-being can sometimes be overlooked.

This article, "Caring for the Caregiver," highlights the very real challenges caregivers face and why greater recognition and support matter so much.

At EABB, we believe caregivers deserve support too. That’s why we offer a free monthly Caregiver Zoom Program where caregivers can connect, share experiences, and build resilience together. To join, please contact Gabriela Pineda at [email protected]

Thank you to the Tallahassee Senior Center for welcoming us for a Lunch & Learn on seizure first aid yesterday!

Our presentation on "Understanding Epilepsy and Aging", gave attendees the tools and confidence needed to respond safely and compassionately when witnessing a seizure.

Did you know? Epilepsy is the third most common neurological condition over 50. Older adults over 65 account for one-quarter of all first-time seizures, making seizure awareness and education especially important for seniors, caregivers, and community members.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and participated in such meaningful conversation!

If you, or your organization are interested in FREE seizure first aid training, please contact Gabriela Pineda at [email protected] to learn more about bringing a presentation to your community.

Last week, we were proud to participate in the Florida State University Public Health Professions Conference and connect with the next generation of public health leaders. It was a great opportunity to meet students, highlight our Student Epilepsy Network, and raise awareness of epilepsy and seizure first-aid.

Many thanks to FSU for the invitation and to everyone who stopped by our table. To learn more about our student program, please contact Gabriela Pineda at [email protected].
