The Constitution of the Seminole Tribe of Florida was ratified in August 1957. As one of two federally recognized tribes in Florida, the ‘Unconquered People’ organized themselves into a sovereign nation so they could maintain their rich history.

The Sanibel Lighthouse was first lit on August 20, 1884. After years of petitions, the U.S. Lighthouse Bureau requested and allocated funds for the lighthouse, given the increased commercial shipping in the area. The 98-foot structure was completed in just 3 months, with 127 stairs to the top. Since 1950, the site has been a popular destination for locals, tourists, and wildlife. TOMORROW NIGHT! Clues to Florida’s maritime history are scattered along the state’s coasts, bays, and rivers in the form of shipwrecks relating to waterborne exploration, commerce, and warfare. Dr. Ireton-Scott will speak on Florida’s Museums in the Sea, historic shipwrecks that have been interpreted for divers and snorkelers as a way to educate citizens and visitors about the real treasure of Florida’s shipwrecks – their history.

Secretary Byrd Designates Arcadia Main Street (AMS) as Florida Main Street Program of the Month! Since 1985, AMS has generated $7,828,034 in public and private investments. The district has seen an increase of 48 net new businesses that have created 193 net new jobs, and over 12,811 volunteer hours have been recorded.
AMS was recently awarded an AARP Community Challenge grant and an America250FL grant which they used to helped to make navigating downtown easier with wayfinding signs and beautification projects including three new murals, painted flowerpots, and landscaping.

Today, Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced that Arcadia Main Street, located in DeSoto County, has been designated the August 2026 Florida Main Street Program of the Month.

“The success of the Arcadia Main Street program reflects the value of community driven revitalization,” said Secretary of State Cord Byrd. “Through dedicated leadership, strong partnerships, and preserving their historic character, Arcadia has fostered a unique sense of place and a vibrant downtown district. The community’s dedication to patriotism continues to foster foundational freedoms and opportunity throughout the state.”

Today is the feast day of Saint Louis, the namesake of our site! This was an important holiday celebrated by the Spaniards and Apalachees living at San Luis.

As a new school year begins, we want to look at one of the dozens of historic schools in Florida that have received Florida Historical Markers. This 's focus is the 113 year-old Boynton Elementary School.

Boynton School served Boynton Beach as public school for 76 years until it was closed in 1989. Five years later, it was purchased by the City and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It underwent a $1.4 million renovation and reopened in 2001 as the Schoolhouse Children's Museum which continues to educate and inspire children to grow while engaging with their local history.
