Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how cities deliver services, engage residents, and manage operations. Designed specifically for Florida cities, the Florida League of Cities’ AI Hub provides municipal leaders with practical guidance, real-world examples, and resources that help them understand AI, evaluate its risks and opportunities, and adopt tools responsibly, all while aligning with Florida’s unique legal and operational considerations. New materials will continue rolling out as this technology evolves.

Created in 1992, the Institute for Elected Municipal Officials (IEMO) program is a comprehensive educational initiative designed to equip municipal elected officials with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to govern their municipalities effectively. The curriculum covers various aspects of municipal governance through interactive and educational workshops led by experienced instructors, as well as offering peer-to-peer learning and networking. This year, our nation will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. For Florida’s cities, America250 is an opportunity to celebrate local history, civic pride, and the people and places that make each community unique.

The Florida League of Cities will be sharing ideas, tools, and resources to help cities plan meaningful, locally driven America250 celebrations.

To make it easier for cities to participate, the Florida League of Cities is curating national and state resources in one place. These materials are designed to be flexible and adaptable for communities of all sizes.

If your city is planning a celebration, initiative, or event tied to America250, please share it with the FLC. We look forward to showcasing the work happening in cities across the state and ensure Florida’s communities are well represented in this historic moment.

Learn more, explore resources, and submit your events by visiting the America250 webpage on the FLC site at https://www.flcities.com/america250/.

On April 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice issued an interim final rule extending website accessibility compliance deadlines for local governments by one year.

The new deadlines are April 26, 2027, for county and municipal governments with populations of 50,000 and above, and April 26, 2028, for special districts and county and municipal governments with populations below 50,000.

The Department cited concerns about staffing and technology capacity, noting the extension will provide greater predictability as governments work toward compliance and improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

The Florida League of Cities will continue to monitor federal guidance and share updates, resources, and best practices to support your city’s compliance efforts. View ADA Accessibility Resources on the FLC website at https://www.flcities.com/ada-website-compliance/.

Happy Mother’s Day from the Suwannee River League of Cities!

Today, we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and mother figures whose strength and compassion shape the heart of every North Florida community. Their dedication – in homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and public service – helps our cities thrive.

We are grateful for the women who lead, mentor, nurture, and inspire across our region. Whether you are spending the day with family, serving your community, or remembering someone special, we hope this day brings moments of rest, joy, and connection.

Wishing all who mother a beautiful and meaningful Mother’s Day.
