The region’s historic railroads take the spotlight Thursday, Aug. 21 during Train Night, a free program at the Challenger Learning Center’s IMAX Theater in downtown Tallahassee.
Florida’s railroad development actually started in Tallahassee, where the state’s first railroad was chartered and built. Train Night begins with an illustrated lecture that will explore this and other aspects of railroad history across the Big Bend.
After the lecture, the Challenger Learning Center will present “Train Time,” an IMAX documentary by Stephen Low which presents both historic railroad activities and present day train operations on the big screen.
The free program is sponsored by the Gulf Wind Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, the Tallahassee Film Society, and Visit Tallahassee.
The guest speaker for the lecture is Gulf Wind Chapter member Richard C. Hall, Ph.D., a noted historian, author and Professor Emeritus of History at Georgia Southwestern State University.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with various railroad artifacts and memorabilia on display. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. with the movie to follow.
