🔥 Off-gassing from EV thermal runaway causes firefighter injuries 🔥

On 11th April 2025 fire crews from the Sacramento Fire Department attended a high speed EV collision into a tree, and extricated the sole occupant, who was then hospitalised. The incident scattered ~5% of lithium-ion cells from the HV pack across the road. The incident was dealt with by fire officers in the appropriate PPE and breathing apparatus.

In the post operation clean-up, when breathing apparatus was no longer in use, the vehicle battery pack vented the vapour cloud on being moved for towing, and four firefighters suffered inhalation injuries, having been exposed for 1 – 5 minutes to the vapour cloud (in one case, only a single deep breath was taken in the cloud). Four firefighters are still unable to return to work (28 Sep 2025) due to the injuries sustained, which include:
