As National Police Week comes to a close, we are honored to spend time with Trooper Gaines’ family in Washington, D.C. This week serves as a reminder that behind every badge is a family, a story, and a sacrifice that will never be forgotten.

We also take this moment to honor and remember all of our fallen troopers throughout the years. Their dedication, courage, and service to the people of Florida will forever remain a part of the Florida Highway Patrol family. Their watch may have ended, but their legacy lives on through those who continue to serve.

We are proud to announce that the Trooper of the Month for February 2026 is Trooper Steffen Wilson of Troop A.

Beginning February 18, 2026, Trooper Wilson , a joint initiative targeting s*xual predators seeking children under the age of 14. Moments before the operation commenced, a key partner agency had to unexpectedly withdraw, requiring rapid operational adjustments. Trooper Wilson immediately recognized the resulting gap and responded with decisive leadership, shifting the Florida Highway Patrol’s role from support to active engagement in takedown operations, including arrests, booking, and investigative responsibilities.

Trooper Wilson coordinated the deployment of additional FHP personnel, K-9 units, FHP Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence (BCII) resources, and unmanned arial systems (UAS) support. Under his direction, FHP teams executed strategic and effective takedowns, resulting in the capture and charging of six violent felony offenders. His leadership ensured both safety and operational efficiency, directly contributing to the mission’s success. Trooper Wilson was formally acknowledged for his performance, strengthening FHP’s reputation and securing the agency’s involvement in future joint operations.

Following the operation, Trooper Wilson proactively investigated suspects who failed to appear at designated takedown locations. His initiative led to his assignment as the lead investigator in a case involving a Honduran national who had illegally entered the United States with the intent to commit violent felony acts against children. Through detailed investigative work and establishing criminal probable cause, Trooper Wilson obtained a warrant for the suspect’s cellular device.

On March 1, Trooper Wilson coordinated with the Crestview Police Department to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect. When the individual resisted and fled on foot, he was apprehended and transported to the Okaloosa County Jail, where Trooper Wilson and partner agents conducted a comprehensive interview. Due to Wilson’s meticulous preparation, the suspect provided a full confession, admitting to soliciting a minor. FHP subsequently filed charges.

Trooper Wilson’s actions exemplify the highest values of our agency. When our federal partners faced unforeseen challenges, he stepped forward with confidence, competence, and leadership. His guidance strengthened interagency collaboration, supported fellow troopers, and protected the most vulnerable members of our communities, our children. His post operation investigative work removed a dangerous predator from our streets, enhancing the safety of Northwest Florida.

Please join us in congratulating Trooper Steffen Wilson on this well-deserved recognition.
