How do you build community resilience? Prepare together. City of Tallahassee staff who are experts in emergency management, public safety, neighborhood affairs, planning and more joined forces with residents in Greater Apalachee Ridge Estates to connect, learn and plan for hurricane season, while strengthening relationships. It was a wonderful night of fellowship and engagement.

Thank you to City of Tallahassee Fire Department, City of Tallahassee Police Department and City of Tallahassee - Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs for coordinating this event, held on June 18.

Our Electric crews plan and work year-round to strengthen the system's resilience and reliability. They also remain ready to respond should a disaster impact our community or a mutual aid partner community. Read more about this commitment to service in this article from the Florida Municipal Electric Association.

"Throughout the year, Florida public power utilities take steps to ensure their systems are resilient and reliable and their organizations – and people – are ready to respond...While we all are hoping for another quiet hurricane season, it only takes one storm. We must always remain vigilant and prepared. Florida public power utilities are prepared, and I encourage every Floridian to do the same." Flooding can happen quickly, and simple prevention steps can help mitigate your property's risks. Here are 5 tips to help with your flood prevention and preparedness efforts.
🍃 Keep drainage conveyances, like storm drains, free of debris, including grass clippings and litter.
🏡 Know your flood zone and always contact Growth Management before your build on, alter, grade or place fill on your property. This could impact how water flows off your property and potentially cause issues for your neighbors as well.
📝 Insure your property with flood insurance. Homeowner's insurance policies do not typically cover damage from floods.
⛈️ Stay weather aware & heed official warnings. Keep materials like sandbags on hand to help minimize flood damage should severe weather impact your property.
☎️ Reach out to our Stormwater Management team at 850-891-6860 to learn more about available resources and ways to mitigate your flood risk.

June 15-20 is "Waste & Recycling Workers Week." The annual observance celebrates the hardworking men and women in the waste and recycling industry who keep our communities clean, safe and beautiful. It was started in 2012, by John D. Arwood, founder of Arwood Site Services, a local waste disposal and demolition company based in Jacksonville, Fla. “Waste & Recycling Workers Week,” has since been adopted by businesses, cities and states nationwide. The recognition initially focused on garbage collectors but was later rebranded to include all professionals in the waste and recycling industry.

The City of Tallahassee’s Community Beautification & Waste Management (CBWM) Department provides garbage and recycling services to more than 76,000 service points, residential and commercial, within the City limits. In addition, the department is responsible for maintaining 13,500 acres of medians and rights-of-way along major roadways in Tallahassee. From collecting household garbage and removing yard waste and bulky items, to commercial recycling and more, this week raises awareness about the important role these essential workers play in supporting public health, protecting the environment and enhancing quality of life.

This photo was taken recently at 7:30 a.m. at Messer Field. We caught the commercial recycling team just before they were starting their workday, providing services to Tallahassee restaurants and other local businesses.

To all who work in the City's Waste Management division, thank you for your dedication, service and commitment to our community.

As we shared last week, the next phase of the City of Tallahassee’s project to upgrade the power lines along Centerville Road begins tomorrow, Wednesday, June 17. During this second phase, construction will take place between Betton Road and Trescott Drive. As this is a heavily residential section of the road, construction will occur during daytime hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week), which also enhances safety for our crews.

Crews will need to replace infrastructure on both sides of Trescott Drive and span wire across it, which will require temporary closures of the intersection of Trescott Drive and Centerville Road. These temporary closures will occur during construction hours on Wednesday, June 17; Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21; and Friday to Sunday, June 26-28. Access will be maintained for residents of Centerville Townhomes. Aside from these six days, the intersection will be open for local traffic only to access Centerville Road and head north.

The City of Tallahassee’s annual Water Quality Report again confirms the exceptional water quality provided by the City to its water customers. Drinking water standards for quality and safety in Florida are established at extremely stringent levels by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Department of Health.

For more than 120 years, the City of Tallahassee has proudly supplied the community with a clean, dependable supply of high-quality water. As you’ll see in our 2025 Water Quality Report, that standard of excellence continues today as the City’s team of water quality professionals uses advanced technology and sound scientific practices to deliver the best product possible. The 2025 Water Quality Report, a federally mandated publication that's also known as the Consumer Confidence Report, provides the monitoring data and explains the source and treatment process for the City's drinking water. The 2025 report is based on the results of monitoring for the period of January 1 to December 31, 2025, unless noted otherwise. The report is available online at https://bit.ly/3Qj2mgG.

Residents can help ensure that the high-quality drinking water delivered to their property from the City's distribution system makes it to their faucet in its purest fashion by maintaining their home or business's plumbing system.

Always remember to use water wisely. Steps including turning water off while brushing your teeth, fixing leaky toilets or faucets and using rain sensors on your irrigation systems can help conserve water now and safeguard this resource for future generations.

Thank you for your support as the first phase of power line upgrades along Centerville Road is complete. The City of Tallahassee will continue this work to strengthen the electric system and enhance reliability as the project advances to its next phase on Wednesday, June 17.

During this second phase, work will take place between Betton Road and Trescott Drive. As this is a heavily residential section of the road, construction will occur during daytime hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week), which also enhances safety for our crews.

During construction hours, regular traffic will be detoured as follows:
🚧 Northbound traffic on Centerville Road will be detoured at Betton Road. Seventh Avenue is also available.
🚧 Southbound traffic on Centerville Road will be detoured at Blair Stone Road. Local traffic for neighborhood residents and area businesses can continue southbound along Centerville Road with caution up to the immediate work zone at Trescott Drive.

Access will be maintained within the immediate work zone (Betton Road to Trescott Drive) by flag crews for emergency vehicles, residents on Cantigny Way and local businesses only.

A detour map is available with this post and on the project webpage.

Pending no unforeseen circumstances or severe weather delays:
✍️ The third phase of construction will be between Trescott Drive and Woodgate Way from mid-July to mid-August during daytime hours.
✍️ The final phase of construction will be between Woodgate Way and roughly Potts Road (near Capital Health Plan on Centerville Road) from late September to early November during nighttime hours, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

As crews complete each phase of work, these upgrades further strengthen the electric system’s resilience against severe weather and improve reliability in your area. Learn more at https://bit.ly/4oo0FLl
