Night two of Citizens Fire Academy gave participants a closer look at TFD’s rope rescue operations! 🪢

The class learned more about the equipment and techniques used by our crews and worked through a hands-on scenario ahead of rappelling night.

Next week, they’re headed to Station 5 to learn about TFD’s airport operations. ✈️🚒

At approximately 10:09 a.m. on Sept. 8, the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire on Thornridge Lane after a caller reported the home was fully engulfed.

Firefighters arrived on scene in approximately five minutes to find heavy fire coming through the roof of a single-story residence. Crews immediately initiated a fire attack. Primary and secondary searches were completed, during which one person was located deceased near the front doorway of the home. A portion of the roof also collapsed during the incident.

The fire was brought under control, and the cause remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

TFD was assisted on scene by Leon County EMS, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Bradfordville Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Talquin Electric Cooperative and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Yesterday, TFD personnel deployed to Texas responded alongside local departments to a large brush fire threatening nearby structures.

Our crew supported operations by refilling engines and brush trucks on scene, helping maintain the water supply as firefighters worked to contain the fire through the night.

Our deployed personnel continue to support response efforts near Possum Kingdom Lake by extinguishing hot spots, assisting foot crews in areas inaccessible to vehicles and providing 911 coverage for local departments during the busy Labor Day weekend.

🔥 Flashback Fire Friday 🔥

Before dawn on September 23, 1960, a fire broke out in the FSU Psychology Building, destroying part of the roof and heavily damaging the fourth floor. The fire gutted offices and laboratories filled with expensive electronic equipment, while smoke and water damage spread throughout the rest of the building. The estimated damage was around $100,000.

Tallahassee Fire Department firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames. Deputy Chief Morris Wainwright was treated at TMH for eye irritation caused by smoke but quickly returned to duty. Remarkably, photos from the scene show how close students were allowed to stand near the burning structure as Fire Chief Earl Levy led firefighting efforts.

A Tallahassee native and proud product of the Southside, Chief Sanders has dedicated nearly three decades to serving and protecting our community through the Tallahassee Fire Department.

Since beginning his career with TFD in 1997, he has risen through the ranks from Firefighter to Fire Chief, serving in numerous leadership roles along the way. His career has been marked not only by professional excellence, but also by a commitment to prevention, education, neighborhood engagement, and ensuring Tallahassee families have access to resources that can save lives.

Chief Sanders represents the kind of leadership that reminds us that service is more than a position. It is a commitment to showing up for your community, year after year.

Today we pause to remember Deputy Chief Edgar Wynn and honor his service to the Tallahassee Fire Department.

From February 15, 1954, to September 4, 1969, Deputy Chief Wynn served this community and department with dedication and commitment.

We remember our fallen firefighters.

TFD personnel deployed to Texas continue to support response efforts in the area. 🚒

Over the last few days, our crew has been operating north of Graford, Texas, alongside other responding departments to provide 911 coverage for the local community, including both fire and EMS calls while local resources support wildfire operations.

Our crew remains ready to serve wherever they are needed.
