We grieve with our friends and family at the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. 💙
💔It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Sgt. Jonathan “John” Schlager.
At just 44 years old, John leaves behind a loving wife, a child he adored, a grieving family, countless friends, and a Sheriff’s Office family struggling to comprehend this tremendous loss.
John dedicated his life to service. An Air Force reservist, he joined the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office in 2012 and quickly earned a reputation over the years as an exceptional deputy, investigator, supervisor, mentor, and leader. In 2013, he was named Deputy of the Year, recognized for his outstanding performance, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.
During his career, John was awarded the Life Saving Award after helping save the life of a critically wounded victim during a violent home invasion. It was just one example of what so many already knew about him—when someone needed help, John showed up.
He spent more than 14 years serving the citizens of Okaloosa County, rising through the ranks while earning the respect of everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. He was the kind of leader who inspired others not through words alone, but through action, integrity, and example.
But John’s life was about far more than law enforcement.
He was a devoted husband and an incredibly proud father whose family was the center of his world. He was the dad who showed up, the husband who loved deeply, and the friend and coworker who could always make people laugh and smile.
He was also a gifted musician and a wickedly talented guitarist who loved playing with a local band. Whether he was wearing a uniform, mentoring a deputy, spending time with his family, or on stage with a guitar in his hands, John brought the same passion, energy, and authenticity to everything he did.
The measure of John’s life is found in the countless people he impacted—the lives he saved, the deputies he mentored, the community he served, the music he shared, and the family he loved so fiercely.
There are some people whose presence makes an organization better simply because they are part of it. John was one of those people.
We ask that you keep John’s wife, child, family, friends, and our entire OCSO family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Rest easy, Sergeant Schlager. 💙🖤⭐️💔
