From Monday, September 7, through Sunday, September 13, Leon County EMS responded to 1,222 incidents. We appreciate our first responders who work diligently to provide care and compassion to the community every day of the year.

This morning, Leon County EMS joined local first responders to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost 25 years ago during the tragic terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. As first responders, we will never forget the courage and selflessness of those who lost their lives saving others. We honor their memory in the work we do every day.

September is Sepsis Awareness Month. Sepsis can develop quickly when the body has an extreme response to an infection, and recognizing the signs is an important first step. Take a moment to learn the warning signs and share them with your family and friends.

Leon County EMS, alongside Survival Flight 19 and Survival Flight 25, recently hosted Stop the Bleed training for Leon County Schools guardians, safety officers, and security monitors.

This hands-on training equips school personnel with the knowledge and skills to respond to life-threatening bleeding and provide critical care until EMS arrives.

🏈 Football season is back, Leon County!

As Florida State University and Florida A&M University kick off the season, Leon County EMS is ready for game day! 🚑

Our paramedics and EMTs will be at Doak Campbell Stadium and Bragg Memorial Stadium, keeping fans safe all season long, including the two big home openers happening tomorrow!

Game-day safety tips:
💧 Hydrate early and often
☀️ Beat the heat with sunscreen, breaks, and cooling stations
🚨 If you feel unwell, find an emergency responder or stadium staff right away

We love our community, our teams, and our fans. Have fun, stay safe, and look out for one another!

Friday Night Lights and Saturday morning fields are back! 🏈🏃🚑

As youth sports kick into gear, Leon County EMS is ready to support our student-athletes on the sidelines. Help keep everyone safe during games by:

💧 Hydrating: Drink water throughout the day — not just before practice.

⚠️ Watching for signs: Watch for heavy sweating, dizziness, cold or clammy skin, and other signs of heat exhaustion. Move athletes to a cool, shaded area if symptoms appear.

🧊 Staying cool: During a heat emergency, apply cold packs to the neck, armpits, and groin while waiting for help.

🚑 Clearing the way: Keep walkways, stairs, and emergency vehicle lanes clear so EMS can reach athletes quickly.

Let’s work together to make this a safe season for our student-athletes!

Meet your medic, Curtis Tygres, Paramedic I.

Curtis is one of the dedicated professionals helping keep our community safe on game day.
Curtis Tygres has proudly served with Leon County EMS for 16 years, choosing the profession because of its commitment to providing the highest level of evidence-based care. Throughout his career, he's never stopped learning, earning an additional Associate of Arts degree, an Associate of Science degree, a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a Master of Arts degree while serving the community.

In addition to responding to emergencies, Curtis has served as a preceptor, supported fellow first responders through the Peer Support Team, worked in Quality Assurance, served as Stroke Coordinator, and was a member of the Florida Infectious Disease Transport Team. Outside of EMS, he also serves as the teaching pastor at his church.

When fans fill the stadium, Curtis and fellow EMS professionals are already in place hours before kickoff, ready to respond wherever they're needed. And when play stops because of an injury, his first thought is simple: "Are they OK?"

"We want our community to know that we are ready, we are trained, and we've got your back. Your only job is to enjoy the game. We'll handle the rest."
