Florida Smart Justice Alliance

Florida Smart Justice Alliance Smarter Justice for a Safer Florida Florida’s economy cannot sustain this approach, and the interests of public safety require something different.

In a state as large and diverse as Florida, ensuring public safety is one of the greatest challenges facing the institutions of government. In order to achieve lower crime rates over the past several decades, the State of Florida has had to dramatically expanded its traditional response: prisons. As a result, Florida’s prison population has more than doubled since 1990 and almost quadrupled since

1984, accompanied by skyrocketing spending on corrections. I 2011 there were more than 102,000 individuals in Florida prisons, devouring some $2.4 billion in the 2010-2011 fiscal year alone. The warehousing of inmates has created a generation of prisoners whose time behind bars has only taught them how to be better criminals. Our state needs Smart Justice. Smart Justice is a comprehensive approach for adjusting inmate behaviors. It is designed to help former offenders live as law-abiding citizens once they get out of prison, so they don’t fall back into the same old habits that put them there in the first place. This reduces recidivism, in turn making our communities safer and easing the burden on taxpayers. Members of the Florida Smart Justice Alliance have come together to transform Florida’s criminal justice system through an approach that introduces hope where, for too long, it seemed to have gone missing – hope for law-abiding citizens, hope for taxpayers, and hope for non-violent offenders who truly want to find a better way.

"God's Own Warden" a Plenary Speaker at Justice Summit V

Formerly known as one of the most violent prisons in the country, Louisiana's Angola State Penitentiary has seen a marked decrease in violent incidents among its 5,000-plus inmate population. Many credit this to Warden Nathan Burl Cain, now the longest-standing warden in the history of Angola prison.

Reserve your seat today at www.justicesummit.org to hear Warden Cain's philosophy and experience in improving conditions at a maximum security prison over the last two decades.

A generation ago, if you asked a Republican and a Democrat to debate criminal justice policy, they would have argued about which party was toughest on crime. Now, they’re arguing the other way: who can be smart.

Since harsh mandatory penalties were placed on the books in the 1980s, the federal prison population has increased eightfold.

SARASOTA - Heidi Holliday spent 10 years in prison. After spending 18 months at the Bradenton Bridge, Holliday graduated from the program two years ago. She's now an assistant manager at Sonny's BBQ. She sees her children on weekends, and she rents a house in Manatee County. She hopes to work as a mentor for female inmates in Department of Corrections facilities.

Holliday is a success story -- the result of a system that worked.

Heidi Holliday spent 10 years in prison.
