The recent electrical engineering graduate received the 2025 IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Scholarship Plus Initiative, a nationally competitive award honoring emerging leaders in the field. A research student at FSU’s Center For Advanced Power Systems (CAPS), Fletcher combines academic rigor with a genuine curiosity about how power systems work.

The IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative is one of the field’s most recognized early-career honors, awarded to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and a commitment to power and energy engineering. Fletcher plans to work in the industry before eventually pursuing graduate school. He has already secured a full-time position with the City of Tallahassee Power Delivery department, a role that began as an internship, then became part-time, and ultimately led to a full-time offer.

Students participating in the IZEA project have officially added the project’s branding as they prepare to enter the next phase of testing.

This groundbreaking collaboration between NASA and the Joint College of Engineering at Florida A&M University and Florida State University is advancing sustainable aviation through the development of a hybrid hydrogen-electric propulsion system. The project’s long-term vision is to help achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions in commercial aviation by 2050.

Stay tuned as we continue to showcase the milestones, innovations, and progress driving this pioneering aerospace research initiative.

Florida State University has named FAMU-FSU College of Engineering faculty member Hui “Helen” Li a Distinguished Research Professor, one of the university’s highest faculty research honors. A leading expert in power electronics for grid and transportation electrification, Li has led power electronics research at the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) for more than two decades.

“The dedication of these scholars represents the very best of Florida State University,” said Vice President for Research Stacey S. Patterson. “By pushing the boundaries of what we know about everything from quantum materials to human behavior, they are not only advancing their respective disciplines but also inspiring the next generation of innovators on our campus."

Researchers at the joint college are helping advance the future of quantum computing through a landmark study published in Nature Electronics. The multi-institution research team demonstrated that a novel qubit platform, developed at Argonne National Laboratory by trapping single electrons on solid neon, exhibits noise levels 10 to 10,000 times lower than most traditional qubits. Lower noise allows qubits to retain information longer and operate more reliably for building practical quantum computers.

The findings highlight solid neon as a promising material for scalable quantum technologies and support broader efforts at Florida State University and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering to establish Tallahassee as a growing hub for quantum science, engineering, and workforce development.
