Alert Today Florida

Alert Today Florida “Alert Today Florida” is a reminder for all roadway users to share the road safely. The campaign was branded Alert Today Florida in June 2012.

In November 2011, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Ananth Prasad charged District One Secretary Billy Hattaway with the task of championing Florida’s Bicycle/Pedestrian Focused Initiative. Secretary Hattaway quickly formed a team and began working towards the goal of increasing awareness and decreasing fatalities of bicyclists and pedestrians in Florida. Alert Today Alive Tomo

rrow. Safety Doesn't Happen By Accident is intended to remind all road users (motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians) that we all have a role in making Florida roads safer. So no matter how you get from point A to point B, pay attention, follow the rules (traffic laws), watch for others, and get there safely!

When sharing the road with school buses, it is crucial to stay alert to keep our students safe. See a stopped school bus with red lights flashing and STOP arms extended? Slow down and stop!

Step into National Walking Day with us.

Whether you’re on the way to your vehicle, walking to the mailbox, or taking your dog out to sniff the orange blossoms, everyone is a pedestrian at some point in their day.

Remember these helpful tips for pedestrian safety:
🚶‍♀️ Use sidewalks whenever possible.
👩‍🦽 If there is no sidewalk, face traffic to make it easier for drivers to see you.

Drivers, remember to:
🚗 Slow down.
🚗 Be extra vigilant as it gets dark.
🚗 Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk. There may be people crossing that you cannot see.

Thank you for celebrating with us! Any day can be if you have the right equipment and a desire to feel the wind in your hair (under your helmet, of course).

Whether you're a driver or a passenger, always look behind you to make sure a cyclist is not approaching before you open your door. Opening a door suddenly into a cyclist’s path can cause them to swerve into traffic or collide with your car, resulting in life-altering injuries.

Opening the door with your right hand if you’re on the driver side and your left hand if you’re on the passenger side forces you to look over your shoulder and look into your blind spot where a cyclist may be approaching in the adjacent lane.
