Sociology of Hip Hop Culture A sociological perspective on Hip Hop Culture

This course challenges students to examine themes and messages expressed within the subculture of Hip Hop through the application of major sociological perspectives and theories. The course also examines the reciprocal relationship between Hip Hop culture and the broader American society, through engagement with scholarly literature, examination of empirical evidence, and execution of student research projects.

Meet one of our panelists for : Dr. Lisa Munson!

Dr. Munson is a professor of Sociology at Florida State University. Her research focuses on inequality, social justice, innovative teaching methods, design thinking, and public sociology. She created and implemented FSU’s Sociology of Hip Hop Culture course and has authored three textbooks, including two on the subject. Beyond academia, Dr. Munson has curated over 50 community showcases featuring hip hop, house, and jazz music, dance, and visual art.
