The Congress of Graduate Students

The Congress of Graduate Students COGS is the official representative body of all post-baccalaureate special, masters, specialist, professional, and doctoral students at Florida State.

COGS is a funding body of the Student Government Association and has been granted its own set of administrative rules and procedures. The COGS assembly is solely responsible for allocating all of the A&S fees it receives from graduate students each year. Congress of Graduate Students general assembly meetings are held every first and third Monday of each month at 6:30pm in the Legislative Chambers, Oglesby Union.

We in the Congress of Graduate Students understand that it’s that time of year when you are trying to push through the semester deadlines: conference proposals, grants, fellowship applications, grading, and everything else in our personal lives that we try to balance! To help pause your Fall frenzy, we invite you, our graduate students and your support systems, to attend our exclusively planned Social Mixer! Come as you are or dress up if you’d like. There will be lots of finger food, music, and positive vibes!

COGS representatives will be present at the social to help you learn more about COGS and what we do. We will share our experiences as representatives and advocates and answer any questions you have about joining COGS and being a voice for your fellow graduate students. Did we say we will be tabling with fun resources, updates, newsletters, and swag?!

Join us on November 12th from 6-9pm at Proof Brewing Company on South Monroe Street. RSVP here: https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6zXPmduLClw7hDU

This week we're celebrating another representative for the Congress in our Spotlight series!

Sara Collins, M.S. is a first-year PhD student in the School of Communication Science and Disorders. She completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at FSU, and now works as a Speech-Language Pathologist in both the schools and early intervention settings, in addition to her doctoral role. Sara’s research pertains to adapting literacy assessment measures and subsequent instruction for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She is also a research fellow on the Leadership in Language and Literacy Doctoral Training Grant. Sara now serves as the COGS Students with Disabilities Advocate in an effort to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, especially as students face unprecedented challenges with transition to remote learning. Sara hopes to serve as a liaison and advocate for these students by simplifying the accessibility of services, paving new adaptations with the changes in learning, and providing equitable access to funding opportunities.

As part of our new spotlight series, we will be introducing new representatives to COGS and sharing a bit about them. This week we're spotlighting Megan Hirsch, our LGBTQ+ advocate.

Megan (She/They) is a second year PhD student in the School of Communication Science and Disorders and is currently the LGBTQ+ Student Advocate representative in COGS. Their research interests include motor speech disorders and speech science. Currently, their research is focused on individual differences in perceptual learning and processing of difficult-to-understand speech. Megan joined COGS to represent and advocate for the needs of LGBTQIA+ graduate students as well as the graduate student body as a whole. When they aren’t busy with research or COGS, Megan likes to play guitar and paint.
